Patriotic-Inspired Snacks: Chex Mix Snack Recipes for the Long Weekend

Having bowls of snacks on hand are key for pool parties, picnics, barbecues and other celebrations during the patriotic holiday, and you’ll want ones that are easy to whip up so you can skip spending all day in the kitchen and head outside instead.

Chex is the ideal base ingredient to have on hand to create the most imaginative (yet easy) snacks on the picnic table to the delight of all. The cereal, which comes in flavors ranging from corn and rice to peanut butter and vanilla, can be easily combined with other simple ingredients already in your pantry to make imaginative new Chex Mix combinations to celebrate summer and create some lasting memories!

Ahead are five fun recipes to put a patriotic spin on one of America’s favorite snack foods, which also work just as well for Independence Day celebrations, pool parties, or just a family weekend at home. TIP: These sweet treats made with popcorn are a great addition to movie nights, too.

1. Stars & Stripes Chex Mix

Why we love it: This patriotic mix will take you all the way from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July.

What you’ll need:

  • 3 cups Rice Chex™ or Corn Chex™ cereal
  • 3 cups Blueberry Chex™ cereal
  • 1 cup miniature marshmallows (from 10.5 oz bag)
  • 1 cup pretzel sticks (about 50 from 15 oz bag)
  • 1 package (11 oz) white baking chips
  • 3 tablespoons red, white and blue nonpareils or jimmies
  • 3 tablespoons red and blue star sprinkles
  • 3 cups popcorn
  • 1 cup red, white and blue colored candy-coated chocolate candies

How to do it:

1. Line large rimmed cookie sheet with wax paper. In a large bowl, combine cereal, marshmallows and pretzel sticks.

2. In a medium microwavable bowl, microwave chips uncovered on 50% power for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute, until almost melted. Stir until smooth. Pour onto cereal mixture and mix well.

3. Spread onto prepared cookie sheet in a single layer, sprinkle with sprinkles and cool completely. Break into bite-size clusters.

4. In large serving bowl, add coated cereal mixture. Stir in popcorn and chocolate candies, mixing to combine.

2. Memorial Day Muddy Buddies

What you’ll need:

  • 9 cups Rice Chex™Corn Chex™ or Chocolate Chex™ cereal (or a combination)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup chocolate candies (look for red and blue around summer time holidays!)
  • How to do it:

1. Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside

2. In a 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.

3. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

TIP: Use different chocolate candy color combinations for other holidays, such as pastels for Easter or black and orange for Halloween, and red and green or ice-blue for wintertime holidays.

3. Life’s a Beach Chex Mix

Why we love it: Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer, and what better way to celebrate than adding pretzels, fish crackers and beach-ball shaped cheese puffs to the mix! Plus, for Ranch dressing lovers will love the surprising flavor boost!

What you’ll need:

  • 3 cups Rice Chex™ cereal
  • 3 cups Corn Chex™ cereal
  • 1 cup tiny fish-shaped pretzel crackers
  • 1 cup tiny fish-shaped cheese-flavored crackers
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 tablespoon dry ranch dressing mix
  • 2 cups puffed cheese balls

How to do it:

1. In large microwavable bowl, place cereals and crackers. Mix until combined.

2. In a small microwavable bowl, microwave butter uncovered on High 30 to 60 seconds or until melted. Stir in dry ranch dressing mix until no clumps remain.

3. Pour butter mixture evenly over cereal mixture. Carefully stir until evenly coated. Microwave uncovered on High 4 minutes, stirring every minute.

4. Stir in cheese balls. Cool 5 minutes before serving. Serve immediately, or store in an airtight container.

4. Star-Spangled Chex Mix

Why we love it: This mix uses frosting, white chocolate and popcorn. And, it’s only 3 steps. Need we say more?

What you’ll need:

  • 6 cups Corn Chex™ cereal or Rice Chex™ cereal (or a combination)
  • 1 cup Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting
  • 1/2 cup white vanilla baking chips (from 12-oz. bag)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons red and blue mix of Betty Crocker™ candy sprinkles (red and blue are patriotic, but multi-color sprinkles  – in photo – are just as fun and summery!)
  • 4 cups popped popcorn

How to do it: 

1. In large bowl, place cereal; set aside

2. In a medium microwavable bowl, microwave frosting and white vanilla baking chips uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave 30 to 60 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.

3. Add powdered sugar and sprinkles. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Stir in popcorn. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

5. No-Bake Peanut Butter Chocolate Chex Bars

Why we love it: “No-bake” means “no oven!” Keep it cool in the kitchen this weekend by grilling outside and whipping up these no-bake treats for all. Get the kids involved and create a new Memorial Day family tradition!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups Honey Nut Chex™ cereal
  • 1 bag (11.5 oz) milk chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter

How to do it:

1. Spray 13×9-inch pan with cooking spray

2. In a large microwavable bowl, microwave corn syrup and sugar uncovered on High 2 minutes to 2 minutes 30 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds, until mixture just begins to boil

3. Stir in 1 cup of the peanut butter and the salt; mix until blended

4. Stir in cereal until evenly coated. Press mixture firmly into the pan, making sure the top is even

5. In a medium microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, remaining 1/4 cup peanut butter and the butter uncovered on High 1 minute; stir until mixture is smooth

6. Spread the mixture over bars

7. Refrigerate about 30 minutes or until chocolate is set, and then cut into 8 rows by 4 rows

Helpful tip: The secret for cutting bars easily is to line the pan with heavy-duty or nonstick foil. After the chocolate is set, use foil to lift bars out of the pan, then cut. This also makes cleanup extra easy!
