Costco is Getting Rid of its Polish Hot Dog For 'Healthier Options'

But don't panic! You can still get the classic $1.50 hot dog combo.

The $1.50 hot dog and soda combo has been a staple of the Costco experience since 1984. While it doesn't look like that deal's going anywhere anytime soon, the $126 billion-a-year bulk retail company has announced they will be eliminating the Polish hot dog from the menu to make room for healthier options.

Rumored new menu items include a plant-based protein salad (confusingly named the "Al Pastor Salad"), organic burgers (which started to show up in some locations last summer), and, perhaps most divergent from the old menu, an açai fruit bowl. In a shareholder's meeting, CEO Craig Jelinek had this to say about the menu paradigm shift, “This new plant-based protein salad, I know that excites you. But it is healthy. And, uh, actually, it tastes pretty good, if you like those kind of things. I tried it once.”

Long-time Costco customers, predictably, seem to share Jelinek's trepidation about this new development. We took to Twitter to get shoppers' opinions on the ousting of the Polish hot dog, and asked what items keep them coming to Costco:

The replies we got were illuminating, with some people happy with the inclusion of healthier options, and others livid at this new development. The whole thread is worth checking out, but you can read some of our favorites here:

How do you feel about the new menu changes? Is there anything they could change to make you stop shopping at Costco? Let us know in the comments below!

I found this out in person yesterday when I asked for my traditional polish dog with deli mustard and kraut and they told me they discontinued them nationwide! I've been ordering these since I was a kid and sometimes stop into Costco just to fill up on gas and have a polish. I know "dogs" aren't the healthiest thing but neither is unfermented soy protein, which this new salad is based on.

That comment about the salad by the CEO is pretty funny. "I tried it once". Applause

I think it's worth a shot to get them to bring back the polish dog. I was thinking of launching a facebook group to that purpose. #SavethePolishDog Mad

Getting rid of the berry sundae and chocolate swirl for the açaí bowl is such a disappointment. If they're truly trying to offer healthier options, then why so much added sugar? Why so much sodium in the vegetarian salad? Management is just doing this to increase profits. When a $1.65 item gets replaced with a $4.99 item, it's blatantly obvious. The fruit smoothie and mocha freeze already doubled in price for no reason other than to raise prices. Costco is trying to go the route of Whole Foods and not in a good way. Trick people into thinking that the food they're eating is healthy and you can charge them any amount for it.

I don't get food court stuff but this is encouraging. Next they should add a plant based burger to the menu.

Hoping my Costco in NJ starts carrying vegan cheese and plant based burgers soon! And how about some damn pizza crust!

Must be a regional thing, as the ones in Pittsburgh have never had Polish Dogs on the menu. Just the beef hot dog. They do have a separate and more expensive sausage on a roll with grilled onions/peppers.
I miss the Beef Brisket sandwiches they had for a while, those were delicious! And also fond memories of the hand-dipped chocolate ice cream bar on a stick rolled in nuts. You are still missed!
We have that Al Pastor salad and Acai bowl. The $5 Acai bowl seems too expensive so I haven't tried it yet. The Al Pastor salad doesn't look too good on the menu board, but maybe I'll try it to see if it tastes better than it looks.

Just go to trader Joe's and get the cauliflower pizza crust.

And funny. They ditch the dog but keep the sausage sandwich. I actually get that all the time. No roll, on a plate with extra peppers and onions.
