Back in August, MoviePass rolled out yet another modified plan for its movie ticket subscription service, this time limiting users to three movies per month for the same $10 monthly fee. Peak pricing and ticket stub verification were also removed as part of the new plan, but restrictions remained on which movies people could actually buy tickets for.
Fed up with the increasingly difficult-to-use service, droves of users cancelled their subscriptions or didn't opt in to the new plan, effectively suspending their accounts. But over the weekend, we learned from The Verge that some of these people received an e-mail from MoviePass stating that their accounts would be restored to an "unlimited" plan — and their credit card on file would be charged $9.95 a month — unless they opted out by October 4th at 9 a.m. ET.

Naturally, people were taken aback by this highly-questionable attempt at customer retention.

According to the e-mail from MoviePass, the re-activated accounts were selected as part of a "test group," and the offer aimed to bring back "the same subscription that you signed up for and you previously enjoyed."
But let's say you wanted to go ahead and re-up for MoviePass. This restored "unlimited" plan still comes with the caveat that movies are available based on "inventory," and has left some people in big cities, like Los Angeles, with nothing to watch.

If you canceled or let your MoviePass subscription lapse around August, you may want to check your inbox for this "promotional" e-mail and opt out before October 4th. Even if you didn't receive an e-mail, we'd recommend monitoring your credit card activity for the next few months, just in case.
Below is the full e-mail from MoviePass regarding its new "test group":
In August 2018, we announced a new offering for three movies a month for $9.95, giving subscribers the ability to opt-in to this plan if they wanted to continue as a MoviePass subscriber. However, our records show that you have not yet taken any action on the new plan, and because of that your subscription was suspended and your monthly subscription charges have stopped.
Because we really hope you begin enjoying your MoviePass subscription again, we have chosen you to be a part of a select test group, who beginning Friday, October 5th will be restored to unlimited movies (up to one new movie title per day based on existing inventory) – the same subscription that you signed up for and you previously enjoyed. If you decide that you do not want this you must “opt out” before Thursday, October 4th at 9:00PM ET.
To be clear, unless you opt out, your unlimited subscription will be restored and you will begin enjoying unlimited movies again (up to 1 movie per day, based on existing inventory) at $9.95 per month, and your credit card on file will be charged on a monthly basis beginning Friday, October 5th, 2018.
If you do opt out of the restoration of your subscription to the unlimited plan, your subscription will be canceled and no longer held in a “suspended” status, and you will not be able to re-join until 9 months have passed.
