Prepare Yourselves For the Steam Summer Sale

Don't miss out on the best PC game sale of the year!

Steam Summer Sale

If you're looking to save quite a significant amount of money on some great PC games that haven't left your wish list yet, look no further than the 2015 Steam Summer Sale which begins Thursday, June 11.

The Steam Summer Sale will take place from June 11-21, and it's the time of the year PC games can be found for the lowest price. Steam users will be able to save on thousands of heavily discounted games during the sale.

How it works: There are new game deals every eight hours, with even more new deals every 24 hours, including flash sales. Steam users will also be able to vote on what games they would like to see discounted later during the sale.

Every year, the Steam Summer Sale has a certain theme. Last year's theme was "Summer Adventure," contained an additional program that allowed Steam users to join one of five teams for a chance to win free games from their wish lists at random. We don't know the theme for 2015 just yet, but we'll undoubtedly see a similar program this year. So, we recommend going onto the Steam store right now and adding your most wanted games to your wish list.

We won't know what the sales are until the madness begins on Thursday. What sort of discounts can you expect on games during the Steam Summer Sale? Well, last year we saw discounts on Steam's hottest new games, including 20% off Divinity: Original Sin and 15% off DayZ, but we also saw steep discounts on older releases such as 75% off Don't Starve and 83% off XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Those are just a few examples of the great deals from last year. Usually, for recently-released titles, the discounts range from 15% to 50% off, with older titles getting steeper discounts, even dipping as low as 95% at times.

In general, your biggest savings will come from indie game publishers whom are more willing to offer big discount on their games. This year, rumor has it great games like last month's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Project CARS to be discounted (since both are from indie publishers), as well as Dying Light, Ark: Survival Evolved and H1Z1. Of course, this is just speculation, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

Here are some tips for getting the best deals throughout this year's Steam Summer Sale:

  • Click through. Don't just take the front page as the "best deals," as there are deeper discounts on older games you might want to play as you browse through the sale pages.
  • Add games to your wishlist to be notified of sales directly to your email address. You won't miss any great deals on games you're looking for this way. Think of it as a Deal Alert.
  • Don't buy any deals on day one. Seriously. Games you might see for 25% off on the front page for day one of the Steam Summer Sale are often further discounted towards the end of the sale. If you're afraid you might miss out on a specific deal you're eyeing, click through to the game's individual page and you'll see an "Offer ends..." bit near the discounted price. Wait until the very last hour or so to jump on the deal if a better one hasn't popped up.
