Careful with credit card gift card (like Vanilla Visa Gift Card). PIA can't process gift credit cards reliably.

Setting up BT software Vuze (used to be call Azureus) to only use VPN connection (won't connect if VPN connection not available.)
Here is a tutorial of it.

Here's a tutorial for utorrent: http://wiki.hidemyass.com/Tutorials:How_to_use_Windows_Firewall_for_blocking_non-VPN_traffic_-_IP_binding

uTorrent step-by-step instructions (http://lifehacker.com/5863380/how-to-completely-anonymize-your-bittorrent-traffic-with-btguard)

Enter the interface identifier into the field next to "Bind to local IP address or interface" in the settings.
Note that the interface identifier is named different on every system, so make sure to check how exactly it is called on yours.
In their example, it is "eth15" for OpenVPN, "net2" for PPTP" and "net1" for L2TP.

Make sure the checkbox next to "Enforce IP bindings even when interfaces are not available" is checked;
otherwise it can happen that Vuze keeps downloading without using the VPN.

If the Vuze setup is done correctly, it will ONLY use your VPN connection. If you didn't login to your VPN service, Vuze won't work.

Four1Fool

Who's had this? Feedback?

ForbidInjustice

I caught this deal a few months ago at the 1/yr $31.95 price. Highly recommend it, best VPN I've used so far. The others like HMA tend to have a lot of latency and really limit my connection speed, but with PIA, I barely even notice that I'm connected to a VPN.

Reliable worldwide servers and their customer service has been top-notch too. No negative experiences yet, but I wish the software was a bit more intuitive and had more options. All in all, worth every penny (and more).

ChicoDad

I got it last time it was a special and I love it. Connection is fast and secure. Could not be happier.

nick8ken

This is a noob question. I am not VPN savvy. I know this pretty much anonymizes you on the internet, but will it also anonymize any sort of downloading/peer to peer activities?

Deal2go

what is this for? sorry for any stupid question. is this for hiding what you are downloading or people not knowing where you are using your computer from?
any pros or cons?

Four1Fool

Which software? From a glance it looks like it won't be running through my router? It says it has a 5 device limit. Is this going to be friendly in all environments? I would want to use it on Mac, windows, iOS, Android.

escoe

what kind of activities?

Four1Fool

Absolutely, as long as you're running your peer to peer program through the VPN.

techmagi

I literally just started a subscription last night. :( Damn.

ForbidInjustice

Generally, yes. I bind the connection directly to my localhost IP (adapter) so it's not thru the VPN.. but that's my personal choice.

But to answer your question, yes... it installs a totally different network adapter so everything you do via the internet goes thru that adapter and hence, the VPN (so long as you're connected to a VPN server, of course).

Surely someone else will weigh in on that question as well.

cluedweasel

It's used mainly for 2 things. One is changing the location you appear to be connecting from. That can be useful for getting around geographical blocks. For example, if you're in the US and want to watch programs on BBC's iPlayer service.

The second is to hide your traffic from prying eyes. Configure your VPN connection to use encryption and your ISP (and others) can't look at your traffic and see what you're up to. It could be useful in the future to hide Netflix traffic so your ISP can't throttle it.

ForbidInjustice

Greetings. Their customer service is EXCELLENT. I did the same thing as you! Started a subscription and 5 days later, I found this deal. They refunded my subscription and let me start a new one at the new price. Contact their customer service via their site OR here on Slickdeals. They'll get you squared away fairly!

cluedweasel

Write them and you'll probably get an adjustment. It's worth a try.

Keep in mind that their billing system is archaic like osmethign from the 80's. As I just found out if you have a recurring payment happening via a credit card, and that credit card expires (or is otherwise not available - i.e. replaced due to fraud like Target etc.) they have absolutely NO WAY to update your payment method. You have to sign up with a brand new account. Their reps have said that if you sign up on the sale all renewals will be also on the sale price, but if you have to "renew" and your card used is expired (and there's no deal like today) - you are utterly screwed.
I signed up with a new account as mine expires in a few days anyway but I'm severely disappointed at their complete lack of payment maintenance options. Just a warning to all.

If you want to sign up with the giftcard option, the discount does not apply. They process the payment through www.paygarden.com. Still, if one wants to be mostly anonymous when signing up, this would probably be the easiest way.

Other notable VPN Deals:

CyberGhost for $17 a year (https://slickdeals.net/f/6931604-16-80-cyberghost-vpn-12-month-premium)
TorGuard for $23.47 a year (https://slickdeals.net/f/6951098-torguard-lifetime-50-off-sale-vpn-service-4-99-month-or-29-99-year-proxy-service-or-smartdns-2-98-month-or-23-47-year?p=68218914#post68218914)

Does anyone know what to do if we just paid for a 100 day access to it?

Can we buy it and redeem it later?

far3320

Hot Spot Sheild has been $30/ year for a while now. What makes this product any better?

Technosquid

It also renews at 20% off. I only use them for the Socks5 proxy. Still, well worth it.

Hrshycro

This isn't going to protect you from the NSA; it prevents people from snooping on your browsing while you're on public wifi, etc.

texasPI

Bought cyberghostvpn a couple months back. is this better?

adama8725

Ummm.... Yeah this can protect you from the NSA as long as you keep good opsec. No logs +you not being stupid =safe. short of making terrorist threats, and even then you could theoretically be safe (I wouldn't test it if I were you )

KoiBoi626

Nice, was waiting for this deal to come by. Thanks OP!

adama8725

About the same, slightly more secure and great tech support (I flat out asked them how they compared to cyber ghost vpn and they spent 20 min trying to find all info on cyber ghost)

texasPI

thanks

kamaaina

The software seems much more convenient. I cannot compare the security, but hotspot shield app on windows, mac, or iOS is pretty annoying. PIA you can use with OpenVPN clients, Tunnelblick and other easy to use clients. Hotspotshield creates freaking popup windows and other nonsense.

Hotspotshield has three server options, only US, UK, and Japan servers. PIA has a long list of options.

So soon? It's only been like 2 weeks since the last time.

eepster

Hey Sunnyside, whats wrong w/that?
I missed it last time-am thrilled, I can finally get in.
Reps to OP!!!

sunnysidescape

Nothing. They should just make it the reg price since so many people are conditioned to only buy when it's on sale. Which it will be again soon.

Aogen

Any Asus router owners routing all their traffic through a VPN provider such as this? How well does it work?

User339811

Why not just use openvpn, mobile VPN?

Aogen

Already am, but I want something more convenient and accessible to devices without configuration such as voip.

blacksoxing

This is clearly the Malwarebytes/Newegg SD price strategy

Make it to where you can always hit front page somehow of SD w/a product that is great, but should just be that regular price....

I remember getting it for $10, and a few weeks later it was $10 w/a flash drive, and then it went up to $12 and somehow that too was a hot deal..

Outrager

Except people on SD are conditioned to wait for a sale. If $31/year becomes their regular price then no one would buy it because they'll just wait for a sale.

bassett

Agree with Outrager. I'm reminded of a story (urban legend?) about a marketing study involving bread. A grocery store offered 2 deals: buy one loaf of bread for .99, get one free and another deal of 2 loaves for .95. The BOGO offer had significantly more sales.

jbloggs

I wish IbVPN would have a deal like this as they haver servers in Asian countries that could use.

JohnGalt78

How long does it take to get your confirmation email with login info?

It's been a day now - I was expecting minutes...

DrRad

I like PIA, but a lot of sites are not blocking their IPs because people are spamming on their network. At times even Google identifies your IP as a possible spammer. I'd go for a smaller service like AirVPN or Proxy.sh, because PIA is too popular now to be useful.

Outrager

That sucks. You get the best bandwidth with companies big enough to purchase it, but if they get too big they get blocked? What a vicious cycle.

alwyn

Damn just subscribed 2 days ago, wonder if they'll adjust.

rutgersfan

interesting because I've never had that problem...one time gmail had me confirm my identity. I use the North York or Toronto connection usually.

If you pay with PayPal or a credit card then when your year is up your account will autorenew at the sale price.

If you pay with BitCoin, you can not autorenew your account and you will have to pay regular price after the year is up. Support will not extend your account during a future sale, and your only option is to buy a concurrent account or wait for your account to expire and pay full price.

dawpa2000

What happens after 1 year? Do I get to keep the $31.95/year plan?

sunnysidescape

Yes, you renew at whatever price you signed up for.

LoloBond

or they will do something to mess up the subscription with Paypal, then they tell you, you have to open a new account at regular price and not even the CEO of PIA can honor the old price.:(

Kerroj

Great! I've been waiting for this!

blacksoxing

Be careful if you're on 4.4.2...may not work on your phone

My Note 3 no longer works since upgrading. PIA has an open ticket, but basically, I just gotta wait for them to figure out a way to make it play nice it seems...

thetoad

I've been checking back every day for this since I missed the one right after memorial day when my previous subscription ended without renewing.

I asked someone to test it on iPhone in China yesterday, it didn't work .... someone suggests a better solution for use in China?

shippy

I don't know why but I found this comment extremely funny.

sunnysidescape

Well then wait a couple of weeks for them to have another "sale". ;)

sunnysidescape

This works just fine in China. I use it there all the time. The problem is the great firewall blocks some of the servers, especially in the US. So they just need to keep trying until they find a server that isn't blocked. Once they do, note the IP address and then just use that server instead of having PIA pick one at random for you. Also, try other countries than the US to bust out of China. I find that the PIA servers in Germany and Switzerland aren't blocked. From there, you can route to other parts of the world.

Vulnerability leaks real ip - but easily addressed!
Here's the story
https://torrentfreak.com/huge-security-flaw-leaks-vpn-users-real-ip-addresses-150130/
Here's the test page.
https://diafygi.github.io/webrtc-ips/

I have PIA and it saw right through to my real IP in Firefox!! No IP displayed in IE.

This is a VPN service. This stacks on top of an EXISTING internet service to provide you with anonymity and an extra layer of security. This will not get you free internet service in places that charge for internet and this will not provide you with faster speeds than the internet service you are connected to.
Keep in mind that all of your data is routed through the VPN service, so choose wisely.

How VPN Works
A VPN encrypts the traffic between you and your VPN provider. Also, a VPN service changes the IP address that your web requests appear to originate from. Example type in 'Find my location by IP' into google and a website will be able to identify you by state, city, and sometimes street address. Using VPN software you can change this IP address, (the IP given to you by your ISP) to make you appear that you are in London, Chicago, DC or really any location PVA has servers. Selecting a Chicago VPN allows you to watch Hulu from overseas, it will even play ads for local chicago businesses, because you appear to be from Chicago. The ability to appear to be in any city increases your privacy online making it more difficult, but not impossible, for others to track your online activity. Because all of your traffic is being routed thru another computer this service isn't free and is almost always slower than not using a VPN.

Just re-signed for second year. Using at home on desktop / laptop as well as on my Note 3 phone. Great fast service.

arrogantworks

on my second year as well. good speeds... lots of options. never had an issue besides I forgot my password once. at $32/year this service is a steal. LOVE these guys.

romeomafia

do they have a korean server?

yuugotserved

same...signed up last year around the same time so it's about time for me to renew.

rollins88

Do they offer unique IPs?

pennywaltz

I assume this promotion is running until Saturday (Valentines Day) at least right? My VPN expires on Wednesday.... so see if I can hold out to maxmize my time :D

yuugotserved

Sorry, forgot to add this to OP. deal is valid through 2/15.

snowcrash

I love that PIA deal gets posted all the time. The more people that sign up for PIA and actually use the service, the more beneficial (to a certain extent) the service is to all the members.

bxcloud

My account expires on soon, anyway to add deal this to my account?

edit: Nevermind got it sorted out

thisaznboi88

awesome service!

yuugotserved

What'd you do? Mine expires soon too :)

bargainfinder09

In a simple explanation can someone explain what is the major benefits of using a VPN service? Thanks!

how did you do it? mine expires soon too

Anyone know if this works with mlb dot tv to get around local blackouts?

Just made the switch to Torguard after not being able to secure my $32/yr rate with PIA as my 1 year subscription expired on Memorial Day. Torguard turns out to get me better speed with the same server locations.

Just remember, if you want to secure the $32/yr rate with PIA, do not delete your credit card on file, you won't to able to add it back on the user account and the customer service won't help you do that either. If your card on file will no longer work for the following year (eg. a VISA gift card), just let the current yearly subscription run out and when PIA tries to charge you again and fails, there will be an email asking you to enter new payment information.

kalirob99

Interesting info, thanks. Not in the situation but will help when I am.

blacksoxing

I like PIA a lot, and it's to me a solid VPN for my MBP/desktop

Android app wise though....my Note 3 stopped working correctly after 4.3 and I had to use the stock VPN app to get it right.

$30 though a year is a perfect price for a VPN, especially since I now feel secure browsing w/my personal devices at work, out and about, and especially at home. In addition, no "letters in the mail"...

kalirob99

It did this to me to when set to L2TP, but after making a new PPTP with their setup it worked again. Go figure, I just know it works fine again on my phone.

liamJ

In my humble opinion PIA is kind of a Pain In the Arse. I signed up for this last year and tried to renew last sale but I couldn't. The only way was to cancel and sign up all over again.

The Android app NEVER works and crashes constantly on my Nexus. The desktop software keeps giving my limited connection errors and is not that easy to get working. Speeds are good if you can actually connect with their buggy software.

Just signed up with TorGuard and am very happy. TG is cheaper, has better apps, more servers, and is just as fast.

AtlzBest26

i like PIA..good solid speeds but their US East Ip seems to be flagged as spam everywhere so i constantly have to enter captcha or make sure i dont connect to it...does tor guard have a similar issue?

Kbow090

overall is a good vpn, but biggest issue I have is that there is no way to use plex with the service running. would highly recommend another service if running plex

kalirob99

Most have that issue as the VPN are honest about their corporate names for servers... and it's seen as VPN's are mostly used to do naughty "illegal stuff." I know Tor was like that for me and I'm on the west coast.

pepepoker

Thank you for this. Was renewing tomorrow for $39.95. Had to cancel that account and open a new one, takes 5 minutes.

ayuen62

which client software do you guys recommend for windows, mac and ios? I'm assuming you don't need to use theirs?

Tangarang

So for someone in the midwest...Torguard or PIA? PIA is only $2 more /year which is inconsequential if their service is better.

Kuma1

I have had to enter captcha occasionally with TG. Maybe 5 times in the past week and only when I do a google search. But not for every google search. It seems that one captcha for google search is good for a day or more. No other links have asked for verification.

Prior to buying TG I did a lot of research on vpns. TG and PIA seem very comparable given the reviews and vpn site forums comments. Went with TG as PIA did not have a sale. TG works great and provides fast speeds. The TG Lite app is easy to use. Been using it for about a week and highly recommend TG. Not saying it is better, it may or not be. TG and PIA seem to be at the top of all reviews.

genocist

need this since I got an email room Verizon.

hizzaah

I use PIA on my desktop which is where my Plex server is stored and I have no problem using Plex from any other device in my house.

How do you have yours set up? Through the router? Could never get mine set up through the router

Watashinoinu

this will let me torrent like crazy?

Chi88

:look: yup ;)

HoleInOne1

Meh, I had PIA for over a year and just canceled due to a decline in service quality. The VPN constantly hangs on me or the software just straight up crashes. The PIA app worked OK in Windows 7 but is basically useless in Windows 8.1. Customer service denies anything is wrong and just leads you in a endless loop of pre-written answers.

I found cheaper VPN deals on slick deals right now that offer better service... I didn't know how bad PIA was until I switched to a new company.

Lottery7

Sooooo....who did you switch to?

royalesilver

Yeah. Who are you using?

raysince86

Looking at previous threads on it, it seems like the positive comments far outweigh the negative.

scsiguru

Does this block ALL BitTorrent activity from my ISP?

gergev

How do we know the NSA hasn't thwarted this?

WClover

I bought Torguard deal, happy with speed and DNS is not leaking too. Installed Torguard Viscosity app.

Kuma1

Be more concerned about the Chinese.

gergev

Their jails are worse.

Kuma1

TG seems to work very well. However, some sites, like craiglist, will block you if you are on a vpn. And, sometimes when searching google forces you to enter a captcha.

jwagner7813

I have this and it works well for me. Only thing that would make it better is to not even have to use it at all, but we know providers ain't going to allow that stuff...

zhopa

Because NSA can't take out a cheeseburger from a drive-through window. :lmao:

To those looking for anonymity, consider this.
When money is involved, it's very easy to follow.

Rexman

Seriously, if they really want to track you, the VPN provider could just log your traffic, which shows the public IP you were using, which can be traced back to you. But at some point, if you want to use a VPN, your'e going to have to trust that they're not logging as they advertise, and simply purchasing a VPN service is not illegal. You should be more concerned about leaking your torrent traffic to the open internet, which can be avoided with the killswitch and connect scripts I mentioned in the Torguard thread (using only a killswitch to close the application isn't not 100% effective in itself). Some torrent apps allow binding to the VPN interface, which gives you a third level of protection against torrent leaks.

If you're doing anything so serious to land you on the FBI most wanted list, then you're going to want more layers of security than a single VPN service. Payment anonymity alone isn't going to save you.

Private Internet Access VPN, new accounts for $31.95/yr (20% off)

+12 6324 Views 9 Comments

Hello Slickdealers! I received an e-mail from Private Internet Access asking me to rejoin at 20% off ($31.95/yr). I still use them and they are great and used to have 2 accounts (hence the e-mail to me). However, I don't see that this link is specific to me so if you missed the past deals, now is the time to sign up.

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/rejoin-vpn-subscription

If you haven't heard of PIA, search the Slickdeal forums as there has been a lot of discussion.

I know this deal is a workaround (meant for me only) and I hope SD does not take offence to it. In the past, some of the best deals were such deals. I also do not see this as a repost since the last deal expired a few days ago.

Hello,

I currently am subscribed to PIA and probably don't qualify. However, you mentioned that the last deal expired a few days ago. I did not see that deal. I usually check this site everyday and perhaps I missed it? I have an alert set for PIA and yours is the only one that I got a notification from.

So I'm wondering, is there someplace I'm not looking? It's probably a simple thing that I'm overlooking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

godlyatheist

I got the same email. I thought I had mistakenly terminated the service. My 1 year is up in 1 month and I will renew it. It's been perfect for my family who use it overseas and I can max out my 60mbps connection at home.

Shakes30

Here is the deal...

https://slickdeals.net/f/7903433-private-internet-access-20-off-vpn-31-95-year-or-5-45-month-new-customers-only?v=1&src=SiteSearch

I am not sure how your alert is set up but you may want to limit it to the word "private" or "vpn". You can find the above deal by searching for private.

bluescore

worked for me, thanks

bluescore

sorry double post

cruz878

Anyone else just get notified that due to Amazon no longer processing payments for PIA your account is being canceled? I tried chatting with PIA to switch payment methods but was told this is not possible and I will need to create a new account (which is a major annoyance).

modifiy

I just got told the same thing. At least I have until Dec before my renewal is up, but pretty frustrating that there was no communication to this prior, let alone nothing posted on their site(unless I missed it). Might be worth making a separate thread on this since I'm sure quite a few SDers will be hit by this.

cruz878

Hopefully if enough of us complain they will fix whatever issue prevents us from switching payment methods. It's just bad business to tell existing customers who want to pay you that they need to create a new account in order to continue doing so.

BionicBeast

This code is now expired :'( Anybody know of any other deals for PIA?

this or torguard

lburgguy

I use this VPN and love it except that my AT&T LTE connection stops when I use encryption. I wonder if AT&T is turning off the spigot once they see encryption.

MG-42

I tried Torguard, for me connections to Germany are most important and PIA was about twice as fast. Torguard gives you a 10 day money back guarantee. I was refunded.

pacifier0983807

How is this compared to the vpn unlimited deal for $19 for 3 years or $39 for lifetime? Anyone have any experience with vpn unlimited?

touche112

I use PIA simply because they're transparent when it comes to their policies and protocols. Speed is great too.

I'd hop on this if I could extend my current 2 years with it!

divinewisdom

I have notice slow down during evening peak hours lately, no matter the server. anyone else noticed this?

cerulean1

Can I ask, what is the primary reason to use a VPN? Is it to stream movies? Download NSFW material? I don't really understand the appeal... most of those activities seem fine to do without a VPN, and if you've escalated into more illicit activities, a VPN isn't really going to protect you. What's the appeal?

Thaineseguy

Dam. My subscription expired last month so I hopped onto Torguard. Guess I have to wait for that to expire. Hope this deal comes around again.

not wanting to TC, but today there is an article in Tech Report on security of VPNs

Private Internet Access VPN Service is a part of the review, and not the worst of the bunch.

My main purpose in using PIA is to bypass the MLB.TV blackout rules so I can watch in-market games and avoid the cost of cable.

Everything else is a bonus.

You can watch other regions of Netflix, you can hide your torrenting, you can get in on deals that are in other regions, you can even get an Internet speed increase in my experience, my mbps doubles when using a VPN .

I've been looking for a cheaper price on this one and found this pretty awesome deal from this link here: http://www.androidheadlines.com/2015/08/exclusive-deal-save-20-private-internet-access-vpn-subscription.html

The last deal I saw on PIA was 60 bucks for two years and that did pretty well; this is pretty close to it at $31.95 a year. Thought you guys might be interested.

This is one of the trusted VPNs out there to my knowledge, there's a list here on which ones to avoid and which ones are good: https://www.deepdotweb.com/2014/07/08/is-your-vpn-legit-or-shit/
Of course there's probably a lot more options out there. The article was posted in July of 2014, not sure how much has changed since.

Similar deals in the past (might contain more information in the threads):

anyone have an idea on what their peering is like from kuwait -> usa?

ThunderGlock

i have had them for a year, and was set to expire in 3 days, so I was going to sign again, thanks.

WORD OF CAUTION, after i bought this through Paypal, they set up an automatic payment, so be sure to disable that if you use paypal.

cruz878

Any way to stack this on top of an existing Amazon paid PIA subscription? Amazon canceled processing future payments for PIA a few weeks back but my existing account is good until Feb.

dogtagz12

Which visa card from Walmart do the accept? Trying to go anonymous

_RT_

Anyone have luck renewing a sub? Agent claimed they didn't have the ability to do it.

ThunderGlock

no need to renew, just get a new account. I'd rather not be tied to the same account over and over, just in case.

nitroxide

just signed up today. saw this deal, had to cancel sub then re-enroll. their customer service was very helpful. now I'm set with 31.95/yr renewable. thanks!

SlammedNiss

Never had a VPN before. PIA seems like one of the higher rated ones out there. Just signed up for a year to try them out.

The same thing just happened to me. I tried chatting the other day but I guess everyone was busy. I need to try again and ask.

PIA is the best. I've had them for 3 years now and use it on all my devices 24/7.

Ryxmd

My account just renewed. Anyway I can still get in on this deal?

I am pretty sure you can't stack subscriptions. However, this deal comes up fairly often, so you'll likely see it again around February.

Yep.

I bought a 2-year subscription from them for $59.95 yesterday - deal has expired so not worth to post it here.

the deal hasn't expired as i just bought the 2-year an hour ago

2 Years of Private Internet Access VPN for $59.95 ($2.95/month)

Private Internet Access (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/urlhasbeenblockeds-special-offer)

I was searching for this same deal since I saw it a couple of weeks back and luckily a simple Google search pulled this deal up. 2 years of PIA service would normally cost $79.90, but with this deal it is only $59.95, so this is an awesome discount.

PIA is ranked as the #1 VPN provider by many sites and provides a variety of services such as:

Secure VPN Account
Encrypted WiFi
P2P and VoIP Support
PPTP, OpenVPN and L2TP/IPSec
5 devices simultaneously
Multiple VPN Gateways
Unlimited Bandwidth
SOCKS5 Proxy Included
No traffic logs
Instant Setup

This deal expires August 31st, 2015.

Any way to stack this on top of an existing Amazon paid PIA subscription? Amazon canceled processing future re-occurring payments for PIA a few weeks back but my existing account is good until Feb.

ccdeviney

Ask 'support' at the PIA website...but I don't think so.

dontbugme69

FYI -

My 2 year PIA subscription ran out yesterday.

On Charter, I'm getting 55mbps without the VPN and once I launch PIA, I get about 57mbps. Go figure.

Never once in 2 years did I need to contact tech support - it just works.

I couldn't be happier with them - and this is the 3rd VPN I've used in the last 5 years.

ndpark

it still works! you may need to dig a little but it's still working 9/2 at 2am PST

Word of caution to new users. I've been using PIA for a little while now to bypass Verizon limitations on my broadband. Over the last six months to a year, I've had more and more problems with sites blocking me because of my PIA IP address. Some sites like Papa John's would just give me a phony "under maintenance" page. Other sites like Samsung.com permanently blacklisted name address and payment methods when I tried to order (so even trying again without PIA failed). Financial institutions and online stores are also cracking down.

This isn't unique to PIA, but they don't appear to be taking it very seriously. The problem is that since people regularly use anonymous VPNs for malicious purposes, sites are blacklisting/blocking entire IP ranges from the VPNs for protection.

The logical course would be to just not use the VPN for sites that don't like it, but it can be a hassle to turn on and off - especially when implemented in your router rather than on each PC. On a router level, you can bypass the VPN for specific sites, but it requires a lot of maintenance. Additionally, in cases like Samsung, once they flag you, it's over and doesn't matter that you switch back to your standard IP and by the time you know, it's too late.

As another example, I accidentally had PIA active when I attempted to apply for a Bank of America checking account. Now I've been told even via phone that I'm not eligible for any banking products with them.

OneEyedWillie

Online banking with a vpn is a great way to get the accounts temporarily shut down and a real hassle to get them up and running again and I'm sure it's the same way with any kind of financial institution as it sets off a fraud alert

I've been running into this issue as well... the odd one is the amazon camel price checking site.. why would they ban VPN use?

also, I made a mistake once of using my bing account via VPN... got banned when trying to redeem a gift card.

G37

I've been using PIA for about 5 years now at home and while traveling.

I have never been banned. Only temporary "this IP is blocked" message and disconnecting VPN and reconnect to another different node solves the problem immediately.

People do stupid stuff behind the IP. It's bad business to permanently ban IP blocks. Temp blocks are the normal way they are handled.

reddhead

I love PIA. Thinking about cancelling my existing service and starting as a new customer.

khalid7412002

Thanks for the warning.

I've been using PIA for about 4 years and besides Craigslist not allowing use while on a VPN, I've never had any business ban me or not allow me to use their website. Chase does ask me infrequently to verify by getting a texted code and entering it while logging on. However, I don't have it setup in my router but rather I connect each time I get in my computer.

If a business blocked me because of VPN use, it would be a guarantee that I then buy from their competitor and proceed to not use that company's products. If someone doesn't want my business, I'll gladly oblige their request take my business elsewhere. I think if enough people stand up for their rights and take their business elsewhere, companies might think twice before blocking VPN use

OB_Bull

This seems counter-intuitive. I would think that financial institutions would want the extra security that a VPN provides when you access your account via a public wifi point. Seems like it would be better to me if all financial institutions REQUIRED 2-factor authentication via a cell phone or authenticator device.

If I am accessing my bank from Gogo inflight, you better believe I'm going through a VPN!

phil21080

I have a raspberry pi setup as an OpenVPN server at home. my android and apple products have the OpenVPN app installed. When I turn them on, my internet traffic gets tunneled to my home router, and then out to the internet. No monthly or annual fees.

brenth77

I think for a lot of sites, it may be done at the hosting-level. Meaning their provider does the blocking. With Samsung, it was their store provider - DigitalRiver. I'd say Samsung had no idea.

Exactly. I think that's the problem. PIA and others sell the VPN service as a security measure for normal users (which it can be and is), but probably a large part of the usage is for questionable activities.

As I said above, I imagine that a lot of the companies don't even know it's happening or, if they do, are just sold on the idea by IT people who either don't mention or don't realize the negative side-effects. What CEO or VP wouldn't think it was great if IT came and told them they found a way to wipe out 99% of fraud attempts or something.

Obviously the security aspect is a good thing from everyone's perspective, and that's how PIA and others sell the product. The anonymity is what they're afraid of. I would prefer if PIA offered the VPN service with unique, static IPs.

This is definitely the way to go if security (rather than anonymity) is the goal - like it is for most. I wasn't able to do this because Verizon doesn't provide a routable IP when I connect. They've got multiple levels of NAT, so the IP I get when connecting is another internal IP on their network. So, even with dynamic DNS, just no reaching from the outside. What I did instead was get some cheap VPS servers from places like Cloud@Cost and Sentris and set up OpenVPN servers on them. Then I run pfsense and OpenVPN clients to route all my traffic through those rather than through PIA. Helping, so far.

Inciter

Thanks for the warning. I've been seriously looking for a VPN service recently. I was ready to pounce on this deal until I saw your post. My main priority is security. I guess I can achieve that by running my own VPN server. Nevertheless, I have strong feelings about obtaining anonymity online. I wish generally people would adopt encrypted communication to alleviate the idea that it is only used for nefarious purposes. I guess I'm going to have to pass on this while I decide how I am going to proceed.

OB_Bull

Only, there is no anonymity. You are logging into the financial institution with your credentials. That is why 2-factor authentication is important. Someone with your password cannot impersonate you without your second factor (cell phone etc.).

If it were as simple as using an anonymous ip for a hacker, the criminal could use a public hotspot to hack a bank account and still remain anonymous. With good security, an anonymous ip address should not matter.

I would be more concerned with logging into my bank using a public hotspot and my credentials being compromised. A hacker could then theoretically even use the exact same public hotspot to access my account and still remain anonymous.

I think 2-factor authentication and secure communications are much more important than forensically trying to track down an ip address after a security breach has already occurred.

A VPN server running in my home would be better perhaps, but I am not inclined to build one and PIA is convenient.

brenth77

I agree with you completely. I just meant that the motive for the companies (or their It people) blocking the VPNs is the IP masking/anonymity rather than the additional encryption provided by the tunnel.

It may not even be that these companies or sites have even been targeted by anyone at these IPs. It's completely possible that they're just relying on someone providing lists of "high-risk" IP ranges.

brinox

Fixed that for you

G37

Problem for most is outbound upload speeds are too slow especially if you have a number of other devices using that bandwidth.

I had a lot of speed complaints around the turn of the year. The speeds on PIA now rival my speed w/out VPN. Even suitable for normal surfing now. Fully support.

KraziAzn

Stay away. I just signed up and now trying to get a refund. Once it is connected it takes forever to load anything with my 50MB. Terrible product.

lady_minx

I haven't had any problems with PIA. Sure it's not going to match my 75/75 connection speed but it's still pretty quick. Try a different location to route through.

Dynomonkey

I have always had good luck with PIA. I travel a lot and have not had any issues with speed on loptop, iphone, ipad.

dunvarna

When I purchased it initially (9 months ago) they had horrible speed reductions.. 75 download slowed down to 2, However I re-installed it last week and I am getting my posted speeds.

So hopefully it will continue and they have resolved the issues.

2 Years Private Internet Access VPN $59.99. Save extra 10% with new account

+98 52080 Views 115 Comments

windowscentral.com (https://digitaloffers.windowscentral.com/sales/private-internet-access-vpn-2-yr-subscription-3) is offering 2 years of Private Internet Access (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/) VPN for $59.99. Save 10% on a purchase of $50 or more when you sign up for their newsletter or create an account for the first time. A popup window on this page (https://digitaloffers.windowscentral.com/) offered the 10%, but I got my code by email when I created the account for checkout. With the 10% off, this brings the final price to $53.96

This deal originally had an expiration date of January 31st, but it keeps on getting a new date. I'll check back every so often to see if it has expired.

Note: I heard from PIA customer service and this gift card can not be used to extend a current subscription. A new account has to be created when activated.

Features:
Secure VPN Account
Encrypted WiFi
P2P Support
PPTP, OpenVPN and L2TP/IPSec
Multiple VPN Gateways
Unlimited Bandwidth
SOCKS5 Proxy Included
No traffic logs
Instant Setup

Price research: This would normally cost $79.90 (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/buy-vpn/) for the 2-year equivalent. With the 10% discount, this is 32% off normal price for 2 years. PIA has had the "sale" price of $39.95 for quite awhile now, so I am considering that normal price for a year.

gregh1977

Is this a legit place to get it? It's not at the PIA website??

JasonJ3611

It worked for me. I checked out with PayPal and received the code within a few minutes by email.

JasonJ3611

The code you get has to be entered on the PIA website as a gift card code and you can check the balance. Just checked on the order code I received and it said 730 days. You then enter an email to get login credentials emailed to you. Just emailed PIA customer service to see if I can use the code to extend my existing subscription since I still have 60 days left. I will post back with their reply.

aznjigga00

Ahh so you get a code to buy it from PIA then? Thanks so much and repped. Had an alert set for this.

gregh1977

Oh ok. Awesome. Crazy my subscription just ended a couple days ago and this pops up. Thank you!! I've had PIA for a year now and it's great, fast speeds!

injaneer

I do not see where to enter the code to get the 10% off.

SHAN5

Can anyone show a good post or describe, how VPN can be used after the service is bought

I'm new to this

thank you

Havmorpfun

https://www.bestvpn.com/blog/38176/vpns-beginners-need-know/

Pi.314

PIA goes on sale for $32/yr regularly.
and it renews at $32/yr.

too bad i cant add this 2yr offer to my current subscription.
starting a new acct and having 2 accts overlap for a couple of months neutralizes the savings :(

JasonJ3611

Description is in OP. If you do not get the pop-up, create the account.

JasonJ3611

That was my thought too. I even gave PIC cs the gift card number hoping they could just extend it, but no dice. But with only having 2 months left on current subscription, I went ahead and bought this deal.

Is anyone else having problems with links on Slickdeals? For the past week or so everytime I click on a link, a new tab opens but nothing loads. Just an "Untitled" tab.

injaneer

No, I have the codes, but when I visit my cart, there is no place to add the code. Then I choose paypal for payment and the total is still 59.99.

123Michael321

I think I'd rather pay with Bitcoin (using a mixer service) or a prepaid debit card, so as to shield my identity to the greatest extent possible in dealing with my VPN. But to each his own, of course.

Shadar

I'd much rather get a VPN that is ultra high quality and not american based and pay a little more than just worry about getting a deal and then potentially lose the main purpose of getting it which is true anonymity.

JasonJ3611

It is on the right in the box with the total. It is pretty small and I missed it the first time. There's a small "promo code?" that you have to click above the line items in your cart.

Probably not for just new accounts as I received an email not too log ago "Re-subscribe today at the special price of $29/year, more than 27% off our normal price of $39.95 and less than $2.42 per month!"

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/special-offer

harle

That's a great price for new customers. I've been using it for almost a year and the service is great.

kg319

Had this last year and torrents would download so slow. I tried changing the settings using advice online and it didnt help.

Dicka24

I got in on this exact deal a couple of years ago. At first the service was great. Now, it totally blows. It's beyond slow. Sometimes I can't even get web pages to open. It doesn't matter where I filter from either. East Cost, West Coast, South, etc. It's been so bad I might cancel.

Can anyone recommend a better performing service?

PIAvpn

Thanks for the comment, Slashinhobo!

To clarify on the "for new accounts" part - this means that taking advantage of this deal will form a new account and you are unable to add to an existing account. Hope this helps!

PIAvpn

Hello, kg319,

Did you try getting help from our customer support? Please DM me a ticket number and I'll make sure you get T2 help!

l0stnyc

They use to be very good but now that so many people are using it, I find more and more websites are banning their servers and ip addresses. Mostly financial institutions and some retailers. Kind of annoying especially if you have to keep finding a good server.

speed has always been good and reliable though. no problems there.

PIAvpn

Hello, Dicka24!

Did you try getting help from our customer support? Please DM me a ticket number and I'll make sure you get T2 help!

bova80

This is the same rate they auto charged my account to renew so not sure it’s a special deal.

PIAvpn

Hi, bova80!

If you sign up for this deal from SlickDeals, then you'll be able to renew forever at the same discounted rate. Hope this helps!

Noplay

what do you use now that is good?
I am trying to find an alternative.
also their ips are pretty much blocked for many sites.

jpowell8672

It's so funny PIAvpn how you respond here, I had you for several years and your customer support is a joke! PIA does not answer back for weeks to months and with B.S. fixes to your problem(s)! There port forward system sucks! I am glad I quit using PIA, there are many much better vpns! You might have to pay a little more but it's worth it and you get what you pay for is how it usually goes!

bova80

Oh maybe that is why I have that rate. Bought it this time last year through slickdeals.

Spider210

I have had PIA for 3nyears now and it's got so slow. I have 300mbps internet and lucky to get 50. Doesn't matter the server and torrents forget it. They go about 20mbps. Service has gone down hill

BugaJozsi

I experienced constant disconnects and low speeds on my iPhone so I went to another provider half way through my 1yr subscription

Super fast VPN recommended by me and a bunch of twitch streamers

InSaiyanOne

There's also a two-year deal.

aerodynamics

How do you sign up if you're already using their service? I went through the link, checked out via Paypal and it just takes me back to the same promo page. Charge not showing up in my Paypal acct yet.

Kryspie

If the payment clears you should look for a email with your login and password info. There should also be a link to download the software and tips to help you get the Chrome extension as well

bencollinz

If you can commit, it's still cheaper on stacksocial to get 5 years up front. I wish someone had told me when I initially signed up it would be well worth it (only chose a year since it was first time.)

bencollinz

You may need to use a different email account. It doesn't expressly state 'new customers only' but that's usually the reason it doesn't work with them.

sublime411

It seems pretty fast so far.

Pi.314

i have this but today i cant get internet.
the PIA software says im connected but i get reach any site.
tried ALL of their connections (other cities and countries).

i can get internet without their software.
anyone else?

WLKofDoom

PIA is great but i always wait till its 50$ for 2 years

WLKofDoom

every time you reup your sub create a new account. 1) for safety, in case any records are kept which they say they are not and 2) to get the promo, you cant always get there promos if you already have an account.

skerlegon

What’s the two year deal?

SER_Healer

I’m very new to VPNs and have been trying to learn more about them. I’ve been considering getting one for general web browsing, but also would like it for streaming in Kodi. I’ve read some things that certain VPNs are better for this than others (streaming), but I’m clueless as to which ones those could be. Does anyone have experience with this brand and streaming? Or recommend a different VPN? Thanks

InSaiyanOne

It's just allowing you to sign up for two years instead of one for the price of two years.

kemetblk

Where is the link for that?

Is this VPN slow compared to others ?

gizmogad

US based. I would go anywhere near this if you live in US and plan on torrenting

DrRad

You've been told a lie by European based VPNs.

tennis8363

No... summer can wait a LONG time to come :)

gizmogad

No lie. Just common sense. How hard would it be for US law enforcement to get a warrant for US company? Not hard.

How about said law enforcement agency using warrant to get IP address and identify info? Not very hard.

Now how hard would it be for a US agency to get a foreign company, whose country of residence, is not very friendly with US?

Common sense my dear watson

DrRad

PIA already received an FBI warrant, guess what they turned over....absolutely nothing becuase they have nothing to turn over. You have no additional protection using non US VPN. The common sense approach is to use an anonymous payment and throwaway email when signing up. If you're doing something nafarious then stick to Tor and Darknet, otherwise any old VPN is fine for torrents and avoiding DMCA notices.

gizmogad

Good for them. Do a google search of ppl getting infringement letters for torrenting. Enough results come back to be Leary of PIA.

To each their own. I'd go with a company based in another country that is not friendly with US. But hey...you keep believing that US federal law enforcement agencies are powerless to get what they want.

Scione

You should try PureVPN. They are not in the US and not part of Five Eyes or Fouteen Eyes.

gizmogad

I just got 3 yrs of Nord VPN...but having a backup or secondary VPN isn't a bad idea

dv8r

VPN providers aren't members of the 5 / 14 Eyes. Countries are. Just saying.

wezlypipz

How does this work with existing accounts?

nsj7762

Is PIA as trustworthy as they were 2y ago? Apparently, other competitors have been exposed for maintaining logs and false deceptive marketing of services. I've also heard their services can be slow.

wezlypipz

I've had them for six months and love them. I get full speed downloads.

slickernsnot

I'd like to know as well. The NYT recommended PIA over others a year ago https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/05/technology/personaltech/vpn-internet-security.html but things change, and of course marketing claims can be complete horseshit.
PIA is definitely more expensive than many competing VPNs. Is there a reliable site that monitors and rates VPNs?

iLikeMild

Apparently PIA doesn’t keep logs and speeds are fast for the most part.

Harelin

Not certain, but I suspect it will just create a new account with a new randomized username - resulting in two accounts.

yakanism

I see $69.95 two years, am I missing anything or prices just went up?

noapathy

Where are their servers based? Thought I read somewhere they're in the US. Could be important for some. Mostly, I'd just like to keep my ISP from spamming me with so much crap so this seems pretty good.

Also, still showing $59.95 for 2 years for me clicking the link in OP. Just going to the website shows $69.95.

worthmining

Then the question becomes, do you trust NYtimes opinion

Titan710

I've been using PIA for almost a month now and I've been happy with the service provided so far. I get max speed downloads and there are plenty of servers to pick from in the U.S. and abroad.

Zusas

I've been a long time user (about 4 years} . I have a 300Mbs down from my local isp.

I generally get anywhere between 100 to 150ish using the US-East servers, which I've found to be fastest.

I do check other servers as there are a few to choose from. The closest in location to me aren't the fastest so I swap back to US-East, which gives location of New Jersey.

I highly recommend.

This vs Torguard? Not taking price into consideration.

PossumLodge

Crappy.

I could not use it to access geo-locked US apps when out of the country, nor Canadian stuff from the US. European servers are slow as mud.

I'm back with ExpressVPN and am again a happy camper.

"Slick Deals Exclusive Offer!"

If the obvious is true and are monitoring this thread bring back the 3-year plans for $60 or no deal, also if they're offering this year plan with access to up to 10 devices is because they probably know most customers only use between 1-5 devices simultaneously

shinyraindrops

Split an account with someone else. So both of you get 5 devices for $14.50/year. That's cheaper than 3 years for $60.

rshakelford

It is but most people I know don't care about using a vpn or wonder why they should pay for one if you can get one for free from the app/play store. Convincing people to stop using SMS messages and switch to something like Signal is probably easier

Dud not have a russia server when i tried it dont remember if it had a china server for chinese youtube tor guard is expensive but their private uk vpn addon $8+ a month works with bbc iplayer

I have Torguard now, hate it, speeds are very slow for me and the connection drops out alot.

shinyraindrops

You're on a forum right now full of people who use VPNs and like to get a good deal. Start a new thread called "VPN sharing" and match people up. It would be like the FP friends thread.

OP should add NEW ACCOUNTS ONLY

If anyone has a better deal for PIA VPN, please let me know. My multi-year discount just expired. I usually want to pay ~$22/year, preferably $20/year.

Thank you,
Tofu Vic

As an existing customer checked on renewing, and it shows $29 annual as well.

Good service. My server has it up 24/7 without any issues.

TrentSteel

For the past three years they've had really good Black Friday deals.

If it's not urgent, I'd wait a month.

Interesting that this price came back, I got this price like 2-3 years ago (black friday $29/yr price) and it has been fine. They have been adding new features to their clients such as split tunneling but sometimes it is slow as it gets advertised a lot..

I have PIA and Torguard, both are similar, I would say PIA has the better apps and interface...

I may get ExpressVPN though just to try it out and get rid of TorGuard or PIA..

MyNeighborElHoardo

Where did you see that? I wouldn't mind saving $10 since I've been happy with the service a few months into my sub.
