Generally, top coat and individual body chemistry/compatibility with the formula determine how well a polish hardens and prep/base coat and individual body chemistry/compatibility with the formula determine how well a polish adheres. A combination of these factors contributes to chipping, though most of these criteria will be moot in your application.

Gel polish will technically harden better, but requires curing with a special lamp.

For your use, I'd just grab some cheap $1 polish from the drug store or a dollar store or use any that you already have laying around. Using a top coat over it *may* help to prevent chips, but I'm honestly not even sure if it will make a difference or not in this situation. If you do use a top over the color, just make sure to apply the top coat while the last coat of polish is still wet if you go with a quick dry top coat or it could pull the polish up ("float" the TC over the wet polish and make sure to cover the polish edges). Prepping your surfaces by rubbing them with alcohol with help with adhesion.

Do any of these harden very well? I was going to use a few to apply to a bunch of padlocks and matched keys.

These are their regular prices, but they get posted here every now and then. Still good prices, though.

Even tho it seems like a $5 code it's account specific that's tied to your email. Still maybe worth a try for everyone. Maybe you received the email a while back and missed it.

Are there really places to get Essie nail polish for $2? I've been getting them from Kohls with my monthly Discover Deals $10 credit, but would love to find them cheaper elsewhere. Thx!

Oh never mind, it occurred to me right after my post that you mean these are this site's regular prices. My bad, but, yes, definitely great prices!

Anyone know if their shipping timeline is reasonable? Want to place an easter order but have never shopped them before.

You can also find Essie at TJ Maxx/Marshall's for $4-$5 (can't recall the exact price). They also carry China Glaze for $2.99 and OPI for $3.99. Color availability varies by store. They also get in a variety of other brands from time to time.
