My comment was relating to the 3/5 compromise, not to slavery as a practice. I thought the context of the conversation would have made that clear.

As to the practice of slavery, it has been around for over 4,000 years. Was the practice of slavery in the US different in it's reason from any other historical practice of slavery? I'm not going to give other cultures, nations, and eras a pass just to condemn the US as the lone or most egregious offender of the practice of slavery.

That aside, this movie series is still well worth $10 for BR.

About 90%, I think. I wouldn't use it to replace thorough research, but it provides good insight as to what was occurring during that time and why.

All for greed? No. To reach an agreement between the 13 colonies so a nation could be built? Yes. A way had to be found to have the higher-population northern states and the lower-population southern states agree on how they were represented in the federal government. Plus, it's an error to try and impose today's more enlightened views on the mindset of people 200+ years ago. At that time, serfs working in Europe were effectively slaves, with few real rights and limited property ownership; so the concept of subjugation based on social status was the norm (and it's the US that changed / fixed that). The world worked differently then.

Great series, only flaw (or very funny) is the drunken camera work throughout.

Great series, if a little depressing as it went on. Nice to see semi-accurate revolutionary material made into docudramas. Way better than sitting through a history class.

Agree, especially on the camera work. I bought it and watched it long ago back when $20 was a good deal for it. I still remember one shot of the white house being built and the camera was some nearly 45 degree angle, and I was saying to the TV "WTF... this is supposed to be a series not a stinking MTV video". I wish all directors who use drunken camera work would be banished to music videos only forever. Instead, it seems the drunker their camera work, the more mainstream they go. Paul Greengrass loves to shake the camera so much you can't see what's happening in chase/fight scenes. Look at Ridley Scott's Man on Fire to see how he devolved from his earlier non-drunken camera work like Alien. McG was pretty bad at first (his MTV roots show), but IIRC he's improved somewhat. Even Steven Spendberg has devolved from the beautiful crane and dolly camerawork in Raiders of the Lost Ark to Munich and a few others, but at least Steven Spendberg's shakycam is not excessive. At least Saving Private Ryan's shakycam was well done so it didn't hurt the movie. I keep saying "rent a Steadicam, man" if you insist on no cranes or dollies.

This is the best Mini Series I have ever seen. It tells Great American history about an episode we all know. This movie delves into the smallest of details about what actually happened, and brings to light John Adams as a true believer in democracy. Great performances from Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney.
