Home Depot Store Credit Policy Change

Mods-Please move this to the appropriate forum if not allowed here. I searched and didn't see a topic on this.

I was at my local Home Depot and noticed the attached sign posted at the customer service desk. Useful information for anyone who shops there, buys store credit from eBay or other sites, or attempts to have a family member use the credit. The CSR said that they will now require a driver's license to use the credit and if it doesn't match the one that the store credit was issued to, the credit will not be able to be redeemed. For example, if your wife attempts to use your store credit, it will be denied. This was effective Monday. She said it was for all locations.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

does this apply to all states? I would think some states prevents this kind of stuff. Also this would suck if all the other retailers starts to copy it.

Not surprised. It was inevitable, with all the fraud and shady "gift cards" aka Store Credit being sold.

Wow. They have their gift/store credits hacked, and rather than fix their algorithm, they inconvenience the legit customer.

I bought something online a few months ago with a gift card. Returned it in store, and was issued a store credit which I could only use in store. What a pain that was.

If it keeps costs down, I'm all for it.

Note this is only for merchandise credit. They are trying to fix the people that are either stealing and returning for merchandise credit, or buying elsewhere and returning for merchandise credit and then selling those cards, and whatever else.

Most cases, they probly dont even have to issue a merchandise credit card (in terms of their disclaimers) but they do anyway.

Gift cards remain unchanged.

I bought a store credit from the seller right inside the HD store. I checked the value before paying him. At the checkout, it say no value. I lost instantly $300

Yup, theft is rampant at Home Depot and other home improvement stores. Can't say I blame them for this. Save receipts and if you get gifts that need to be returned then just have to remember you need to be the one to go in. Although to it seems like if they are using a driver's license that it would make more sense to tie the credit to an address vs a name. Then anyone in the family can use it.

Yep, he went out to his car, placed an order and used it all up. Why would anyone ever buy a gift card from someone they don't know?

this says "store credit", not gift cards.

i don't like this stupid policy either.

but currently it is not against federal law.

state laws may be different, you need to check.

if they don't want to incur the wrath of good state's atty generals, they will start letting people know this when they get their "store credit" instead of just those who try to redeem it at the pos.
