I picked up one of these over the weekend due to broken central A/C and am very happy with it, especially since it was about $65 cheaper than the 8000 BTU LG at Home Depot. It's a little loud on high (all fan noise, not compressor hum/rattles) but you can sleep with it on low and it has plenty of cooling power. It has some interesting features like a dehumidify function and a "follow me" remote that monitors the temperature where you are and keeps the A/C running if it is still hot in a far part of the room.

It is very efficient and is only pulling ~550 watts. Instead of letting the condensation drip out, it lets it build up in a little well, then it flings it onto the condenser with the fan which improves the efficiency.

Costco doesn't sell it online but it is this model:

Looks like this:

They also had the 10 or 12k BTU unit for about $239 if you need a larger one.

At Costco in Goleta, CA it's back up to $239.99. Was cheaper (I think this $174.99 price) Friday and I should've grabbed it then. Oh well.

How is this brand, compared to Frigidaire, LG, GE, etc.

The $239 one is a 12000 BTU unit. Our Costco has them both next to each other; they might just be out of the small ones.

I have had the 8000 BTU model for a couple of weeks now; it cools fine and is proving to be very efficient but it is kind of loud. It's all white noise/whooshing from the fan, not from the compressor. We have it in at the other end of a 400± sq. ft. room and the sound is noticeable but not objectionable. It would probably be too loud right next to a bed.

It is made by Midea which makes several other brands like Arctic King, Kool King and Comfort Aire. They are on the basic end of the spectrum as far as I can tell -- but, looking inside of it, it is put together with a decent attention to detail with rubber tubing around any hoses that could resonate, lots of little foam pieces to keep rattles from starting up and rubber washers under the screws.

I'm happy with it overall but if I was planning to keep one for years and years I would probably hunt for a deal on the 8000 BTU LG.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the picture I took an it's indeed the 12k BTU model at $239.99 now. They must have had the 8k BTU model and moved it or sold out as it wasn't in the aisle with the other A/C units. Now I'm wondering if I should've asked or looked around for a standalone display with the 8k BTU model.

I have a Danby purchased from Costco and while it functions normally, the noise it makes is unbearable. A high pitched whine as long as the compressor is on, no matter the speed. I don't have a receipt or a box otherwise I would consider returning it..

They can just look up your membership car they will find your purchase history. Should be okay for 90 days return.

I returned a defective microwave I bought 4 years earlier to Costco. No receipt; they looked it up with my membership card. When they told me how long ago I had bought it, I felt like an idiot and I was fully ready to leave and throw it in the trash, but they took it and gave me the purchase price for it.

TL;DR - Costco is awesome. Take your unit in and exchange it.

I was at Costco today and they had the 8000 btu one on closeout for $99.99 (in Plano, TX). There was still 6-8 of them on the shelves. I bought one for next spring/summer and probably won't even open it up until then. I asked customer service if I could still return it next spring if I didn't like it and they said yes.
