Reference prior thread, prices now a little better: https://slickdeals.net/f/10029672-8tb-western-digital-wd-red-nas-3-5-hard-drive-wd80efzx-for-210-edu-email-req#commentsBox

re: Why is this a good deal:

This comes up in every thread on WD Red drives, which are specifically for NAS setups. The 8 TB drive is $290 all day at every major vendor. Most people buy 2-4 of these at a time, so thats ~$180-$360 off. I doubt you will get a better deal than this on these drives in the next few years @$25/TB for a bare red drive that you don't have to harvest from an external drive and hope for the best.

These prices are as low as WD Red drives have ever been, and likely will be for the near future. Red drives have held their value and not come down in price over the last few years.

I think either adblock or ghostery hides the button, so try in a native browser if you have any blockers.

This is a continuation of a deal posted by mnrivera210. Here's the link to the OP.

Here are the original instructions, which were perfect so just copied here:

Go in through this link.
https://www.wdc.com/bin/studentPurchasePlanLogin

Scroll to the bottom to "Internal Hard Drive Storage"
Select WD Red NAS Hard Drive
Make Sure Form Factor is at 3.5
Select 8TB from the drop down
Add to Card should appear, if not then its all gone :-(

These have 3 YR Warranty and are straight from WDC.

NOTE: The original deal came in at $210 (before tax). This time around it came to $198.39 (before tax), which would be about $24.79/TB.

I can confirm that the 6TB WD Reds are still alive. You just have to jump through the hoops of adding them into the cart first before logging in to your student account. I just ordered 2 as yesterday I learned that my Synology NAS is not "officially" compatible with the 8TB Reds that I ordered in the last deal. We'll see if I can make them work (if they ever ship). If not, I'll put a couple of these bad boys in.

Cant imagine why the 8 TB would be any different, they probably just have not formally tested it.

Just my luck, my state uni is not on the list. They have all sorts of community colleges, high schools, and even the uni that the X-Men go to-- but not my state uni LOL

Hopefully that is all that it is. It looks like no one on r/Synology knows exactly why (or has dared to try), so I'll be their guinea pig Stick Out Tongue Someone said there might be a screw mount issue or something so who knows...

@Hogwarts.edu gets more respect than your state college it seems!

FWIW, the latest QNAP boxes say they support the 8 TB, so I doubt there is a screw issue.

Im now trying to decide between the 1517+ vs the ts-453b

That's $100 cheaper than buying a WD MyBook Duo 16TB and pulling the 2-8TB drives out.

Good find, OP.

Yea seems like they release very limited stock, or we just have a ton of lurkers who snatched them up.
