This was a concern brought up in the previous thread as well. Hope this helps Smilie

Basically, there is no monthly charge unless you actually activate the phone on AT&T GoPhone service.

You can choose to buy the phone with a refill card or just buy the phone outright without one. Either way until you actually activate, there are no service charges. It's prepaid service, so you have to pay each month upfront anyway. It's not a recurring plan or contract.

When you checkout they make you "select a plan" but you're not bound to anything. It's just a placeholder of sorts for the sake of completing the transaction (just the way their system is set up). When/if you do decide to activate with GoPhone service, then you'll be charged (you can use the refill card for this if you decided to purchase one). Otherwise you can simply remove the refill card from the transaction on the Order Summary page and simply buy the phone alone and owe absolutely nothing else to AT&T.

If you want to unlock it there are specific instructions for that as well. Basically, don't power on the phone with the GoPhone SIM in it or it will activate and lock it to AT&T GoPhone (and you can't unlock until you've paid 6 months of GoPhone service). Instead, keep it powered off or better yet don't even open the box and submit the IMEI number located on the phone's box to the AT&T unlock portal (link here [att.com]) and if they approve it, it's unlocked for free. Once unlocked you can use it on AT&T (yes, even their Postpaid service), T-Mobile or Verizon with full compatibility (Cricket, MetroPCS and others as well). It is missing one LTE band for Sprint so it isn't fully compatible on their network (they have their own model Apple made).

If anyone else can add anything I may have gotten wrong or missed, please feel free to help out Smilie

Shoot. I wonder what the hit to miss ratio is on unlocking these? It's a stellar deal if they get unlocked.

Check the other thread with 170 TU, lots of folks complained about the same. However there are a few phones that got unlocked too.
