Some of the cheaper phones are also available through craigslist for around $100-120 YMMV depending on your local craigslist ads.

So you trade in a phone you own for a phone you have to give back in 18 months and also get locked into a plan?.....

Interesting. I was looking for a way to get an iPhone 7+ for my wife's line on Sprint since Sprint hasn't offered any decent upgrade offers of late. I have seen this for a couple of weeks but coming up with a qualifying trade in phone that was cheap to obtain was holding me back. So port out of Sprint to Metro then back to get the $5 7+. I better check that Sprint doesn't have any disqualifying port back in within so many days rule before I try it.

I went to the Sprint Store and they said that no promo code was required. And also verified that the Samsung ON 5 was eligible for trade-in.

After 18 months you have the option of buying the phone for around $200 and after 12 months you can upgrade to the iPhone 8 too.. Plus trade in is only valuable if you have a lower priced phone.. This post was intended to use the Samsung ON 5 as exchange.. It is also available in Walmart at $69 for the Walmart family plan..

You might also be able to just get a new number on MetroPCS to get the phone..

The offer is good only on new lines so I would need to port out my wife's Sprint line to Metro then back to Sprint again. PITA to get an iPhone on the cheap for sure.

Maybe you can save me a trip to the local MetroPCS store in the ghetto. Any idea of the requirements to keep the free phone "free"? If I port my Sprint number to open the MetroPCS account to get the phone would I be able to close it the next day and still keep the phone free? Not sure what they charge regularly for this garbage phone but I don't want to get dinged for over $100 if it comes to that. The website isn't giving much info about this. I figure I am going to spend at least $30 just to initiated the service that I won't be able to recoup.

I switched to MetroPCS and was charged $38 for the phone and service included.. And you will port the number out from MetroPCS to Sprint so it shouldn't be an issue..

I would not risk porting, I would...

1) look on eBay for sprint non-working phones under $10 shipped.

2) check IMEI number on ting.com under byod

3) buy old (non-working) sprint phone with good IMEI from eBay for under $10.

4) use referral link (google "ting referal" without quotes) to set up new ting account (if you use amazon pay, be sure to disable in amazon pay (not in ting) so ting does not charge you erroneous charges.

5) activate ting line and new phone number with newly purchased sprint IMEI immediately before getting On5.

6) use ting number/account/pin to port to MetroPCS and get On5.

total out of pocket should be the eBay phone and 1mo metro fee ($30 for first line or $25/line if activating 2 or more lines). MetroPCS still has the add a line get a $60 phone (maybe On5) for free? maybe? I don't know. If so, you can get 2 On5 for $50 + eBay cost.

You should be able to use the IMEI again (after the number is ported from ting) to rinse and repeat from step 5. You should be able to do this up to 4 times on the ting account for up to 4 On5 devices.

Reason why only do the BYOD with ting up to 4 times, your referral credit is $25, the max they can try to ding you for unused like is $6... 6 x 4 = 24 which is under your credit for using referral link to create new ting account
