TL;DR: Both are great vacuums. If you have a large layout, or lots of furniture, then the 900 series is a no brainer. If you have a smaller area such as an apartment, loft, 1000 sq/ft single floor home, then the 800 series should work fine for you. If you can afford it though, spring for the 900 series, you won't regret it.

I own both the 880 (for finished basement) and 980 (for main floor). While the 880 and 805 are slightly different, I will speak to the difference of the two that I own:

The 880 is a great botvac that has 5x more suction power than previous 700 and below models, the rubber rollers which are infinitesimally easier to clean, and slightly better battery life (battery between all models varies tremendously baased on how much hardwood floor vs. carpet vs. high pile carpet you have, with carpet depleting battery faster).

I personally love the 980 leagues above the 880. While I still like the 880, the 980 is far and away their best model and it shows.

Both vacs are the same but here are the differences the 980 has over the 880:

- 10x carpet suction (compared to 5x on the 880). If you have carpet, and pets, there is no comparison. While the 880 will be better than not vacuuming at all, it's crazy to see what the 980 picks up that the 880 leaves behind in those types of conditions.
- Battery life, while again situational, and a lot of carpet with that 10x boost will deplete it faster, is rated at 30 minutes longer run time than the 880
- Intelligent mapping. I see some people complaining about this and i honestly don't get it. You can set right in the app if you want the vac to do a single pass or multiple, so that argument doesn't fly to me. Where the "intelligent mapping" really shines though is two-fold. First, it vacuums much more like a human would, in straight lines and moves from room to room. The 880 uses the same "intelligent randomness" that all the roombas before it uses. The 880 generally does a good job, but it really doesn't know if it's been somewhere before or not, which leads to my second part of this point
Second: the intelligent mapping allows the robovac to "pause" it's current job, go back to the base, recharge, and then pick up where it left off before. If you have a larger floor plan, lots of furniture for it to move around, many rooms the roomba will need to traverse, then the 900 series is a no brainer. The 880 would mill around for 40 minutes or so, hitting some of our main room, and a random other room (we have 5 rooms counting laundry room, bathroom, etc on our main floor) then go back to the charger and call it a day. Our 980 will start in one area, do it's job to the point where battery is depleted, go back to the base, charge, and then start back where it left off.

Yeah, Boxxxed return policy is only 14 days. Not worth saving $30 plus jumping through all the hoops their shill is suggesting.

Oh, and this fine print:

"Please note that purchases made with a Promo Code or pursuant to a Promotion are final and are not eligible for return, unless the reason for the return request is for errors or inaccuracies in the order made by Boxed. Specialized or custom purchases are also ineligible for return, unless agreed in writing by Boxed, in its sole discretion."

Yes. You can save about $40 if you wait for a Costco sale, but this is a great price for one of the best models of Roomba (no one should buy a 5xx, 6xx, or 7xx series). "Costco warranty" you get from buying at Costco is also a great value.

There are plenty of these vacbots on Amazon. I'd love to see a comparison between Roomba and cheaper alternatives :-)

Is it worth spending few more and get 960 model? Any idea about suction power? 960 is app/wifi controlled and comes with camera and room mapping technology.

I'm wondering if its worth $200 more as well. This seems like a good first autovac for me. App control would be great but not a deal killer.

960 is on sale at Fry's for 549 no tax. You could also get it for 20% off on 600 at Bath Bed and Beyond(YMMV).
