Verizon Fios just announced their Gigabit Internet service this morning: http://www.verizon.com/about/news...peeds-they

Looks like it's an improvement upon their "Instant Internet" speeds and with better availability.

Details:
Speed - "downloads as fast as 940 Mbps and uploads as fast as 880 Mbps"
Price - $69.99/month for just Internet, $79.99/month for "triple play" (Internet, TV, home phone) when you order online (goes up to $84.99 in 2nd year)
Availability - "over 8 million homes in parts of the New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Richmond, Va., Hampton Roads, Va., Boston, Providence and Washington, D.C. areas"

Other Notes:
"In areas where Fios Gigabit Connection service is available, Verizon now offers two tiers of standalone Internet service – 50 Mbps for $39.99 a month and Gigabit Connection for $69.99 a month when ordered online."

"Existing customers with Instant Internet service today will automatically receive Fios Gigabit Connection and will see their bills lowered."

Had trouble finding a phone number or link to a cart on that press release above. Looks like their sales site has both: http://fios.verizon.com/fios-speeds.html

Upgrading existing connection

Added 06/11/2017 by BramA2307

Verizon does not offer you the option to upgrade to Gigabit for $69.99/month. However, you can request a move to the exact same address, and get the price this way. Several users have had success with this method. Here's how to do it:
  • Sign in to the Verizon FiOS portal
  • Search for 'move' in the search box
  • Select 'move my services'
  • Select the option that says the current resident is moving out
  • Select the same date for disconnecting the old address, and connection the new address. You probably will have downtime on just that day.
  • Select the gigabit option, go through all the questions, confirm order

You'll get an email requesting documentation or a contact number for the current resident so they can arrange disconnecting them, which is of course you. Replying with a landlord contact number seems to work fine. You can put in the number of someone from your own household for example.

If you're still in contract, expect to pay an ETF (Early Termination Fee).
May be able to convince telephone customer support rep to waive the ETF and credit it back. Tell them there was no ETF notice when placing order online, and no mention of ETF in the subsequent monthly cost estimate email. YMMV.

Cost breakdown

For those who are cancelling current service and then calling to activate new service under another account name, please be advised that you much schedule deactivation of current service first.. then you can apply for new service online. Also here is the pricing breakdown for standalone gigabit internet service with FIOS.. (I was really surprised to see there is no commitment needed or no extra taxes, fees or charges are added to the $69.99 monthly fee):

Services Ordered: Monthly Amount
Fios Gigabit Connection $194.99
$10 Exclusive Online Order Discount Included -$10.00
$115 Special BonusDiscount Included -$115.00
Estimated Monthly Subtotal $69.99
Taxes, Fees and Other Verizon Charges $0.00
Estimated Monthly Total^ $69.99
One Time Charges: Charge Fios Setup @ $90 (Fee Waived due to online order)

Figure out your final bill with TV box rental fees:
V = number of TVs
if only one TV add $10
if more than one TV then $12 x V + $10
best way to avoid TV box rental fees is to get Tivo or your own HTSPC Windows media player (research this) with HDHOMErun or other PC cablecard tuner, you will need to pay unavoidable $5 monthly rental fee.
if you choose TV package that has ESPN or other sports channels add another $6-7
if you choose not to keep the Verizon residential phone number private add $4-5 per month.
add a broadcast fee that is unavoidable = $5-6

NYC:
NY Municipal Construction Surcharge
$2.49

Services Ordered: Monthly Amount
Fios Gigabit Connection $134.99
$10 Exclusive Online Order Discount Included -$10.00
$55 Special Bonus Discount Included -$55.00
Estimated Monthly Subtotal $69.99
Taxes, Fees and Other Verizon Charges (see detail) $2.49
Estimated Monthly Total^ $72.48

For existing customer, I would recommend to wait until online is available to select the upgrade. Phone in you may end up with less discount on the 2nd year. Just be aware.

Here is the breakdown (This is through phone. Online may carry different discount)

–$10 Fios Bundle 24 Mo. Discount thru May 1, 2019
–$15 Special 12 Mo. Discount thru May 1, 2018
–$110 Special Speed Bonus Discount Included

Internet
  • First Year: $69.99
  • Second Year: $84.99
  • Third Year: $84.99 (If $110 holds)
Bundle
  • First Year: $79.99
  • Second Year: $94.99
  • Third Year: $104.99 (If $110 holds)
If you do it online you will get 2 year w/ $10 discount and keep it at $69.99

Verizon has launched a new offer aimed at gamers through a partnership with Microsoft Xbox to bundle a one-year subscription with its standalone 1 Gbps FTTH service, a move to lure more customers as it reaches greater penetration of Fios in its Northeast market regions.

New customers that sign up for standalone 1 Gbps service between April 5 and May 4 will get a one-year Xbox Live Gold subscription and a choice of two top multistreamer games—PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds or Sea of Thieves.

Pricing for the new service is competitive. Users will be able to get the Fios gigabit Connection for $79.99 a month. Any eligible customer that signs up online will also be able to waive the $99 setup charge.

Verizon Fios just posted an announcement for gigabit internet (faster than the obscenely priced 750/750mbps previous package) for $69.99/month plus the standard device rental fees.

Automatic price cut

The standalone 750Mbps Internet service cost $150 a month, more than twice the price of the new gigabit tier. Existing customers who bought that 750Mbps plan "will automatically receive FiOS Gigabit Connection and will see their bills lowered," Verizon said.

Unfortunately, there aren't any changes to existing pricing and service tiers in FiOS areas where gigabit is not yet available. "We will continue to expand but have no timetable to share yet on availability in additional markets," Verizon said. That means customers in some FiOS areas will continue to pay more than $70 a month for speeds slower than a gigabit.

Yup, doesn't show as an option for me in Boston suburbs at the moment. However the Instant one wasn't offered either so it may be just people right in the cities at first.

Dang, I just signed a 2-year contract for 50/50 at $69, including all taxes/modem. Thought that was reasonable at the time.
I'm paying $39/mo for 50/50 with no contact...

Tax included (though I own my modem)

Would be awesome to get this. Currently in Philly suburbs 18 months into a two year commitment for 50/50 Internet ($29.99 for the first year, $39.99 for the second year). But getting 20X the speed for $30/mo is worth it, especially since we strain our current connection. I'd like to see the details for existing customers.
