And whats the reason to have a separate modem and router. Wouldn't one device be cheaper than getting two separate devices?

Because when the router hardware inside the box goes bad your combined unit is now broken. With separate devices, when your router goes bad, you replace with a new router.

And, no, it's not necessarily cheaper, especially if you're at slickdeals.
