WD 8TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive WDBBFB0080HBK-HESN

$191.05 update: $187.04 now

not as good as $189 BB deal last week, pricewise. It's a WD nod

Correct, which are NOT the Reds, I repeat these are NOT the WD80EFZX Red drives from the previous Best Buy deal, this is a different enclosure with a different drive.

WD80EFZX = Reds
WD80EZZX = Green (now called Blue)

They may still be good drives and better than Seagates, but don't buy this thinking you're getting the same drives as from the BB deal the other day.

Is this a more reliable drive than the seagate?
The seagate is available for $180. Not considerably cheaper, but it does have usb ports, which I think can be used to attach additional drives.

What do you think?

It's a HGST / Hitachi - infinitely more reliable than that POS Seagate.
It's also PMR vs. the crappy SMR of the Seagate.

I own all three models (Red, Green/Blue/White-label, actual Ultrastar He8) - the housings and PCBs are identical.

I have a personal bias against Seagate for a few reasons. A while ago they made hard drives for macbooks that regularly failed in such a way the the read head physically scratched the hard disk, making it unrecoverable. They also made USB drives that would go to sleep in the middle of read/write operations. They would only stay awake with specific drivers on specific operating systems. Finally, until the last few months they had by far the worst reliability on backblaze reports for server hard drives.
I'd recommend HGST or Toshiba for reliability, but I usually buy Western Digital because of variety and price.

This is nice, but i would not want to put an 8TB on my desk unless i have a backup somewhere else and unless one of the data on the drive is protected.
