This is a nice little box. I had it for several years, but just keep in mind this can't run Plex if that's important to you. It is also generally slow for most of other tasks due to its CPU and miniscule RAM. I had it running as a media server and streaming 1080p content, downloading via Sickrage and Couch Potato with Nzbget, and backing up several client computers. Among other things. If you're a power user who uses a lot of DSM features, you'll probably wish you had gotten a more powerful box.

Thanks, OP. I saw this briefly at $150 on Amazon and kicked myself for not getting it when it went back up to 170. Glad I waited.

LOL DUDE... Here I am thinking "WOW, what an upgrade!!" (from my DS211j) and you're saying "due to its CPU and miniscule RAM" lol LMAO.

Not laughing at your comment, just amused by how things are all relative. I bought a DS211j on January 11, 2011 for $232! It has a single core 16-bit 1.2GHz CPU and 128MB of RAM lol... Compared to this DS216 which has a dual core 32-bit 1.0GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM!

AND it has hardware encryption and USB 3.0 (which I'd love for my backups to external hard drives)!! Yes enabling encryption slows it down, but from what I've read the slower encrypted speeds will still be faster than the max non-encrypted speeds I'm getting from my DS211j!

Anyway. For $140 I'm going to f*cking jump on this. I was planning on getting the DS216 or DS216+ but for this price I'll get the 216j. I imagine it will be a major upgrade compared to my DS211j. And honestly I don't care about PLEX. I just want something that will read/write faster, have hardware encryption, and have USB 3.0 ports. Worst case if it's a turd I'll return it, but I anticipate loving it.

Haha, very true. Specs are all relative to what you already own.

And I'm an idiot. I was actually referring to the DS212j, which has 256 MB memory and USB 2.0 ports. If I was still using the 212j, I'd definitely consider this one. It definitely is a nice upgrade to what you have now and a nice price. Enjoy it!

I have this, and love it. Tons of cool features that I do not use, but running plex on this is smooth. Edit: I have the 214, so not 100% sure that this model runs plex.
