Most folks know, but it's worth a mention- Anything heavy is much safer when mounted into wall studs (wood support beams behind drywall). There's multiple ways / tools to locate them (knocking on wall is simplest), can use a thin poker & tiny guide-holes to ensure secure mounting. I'll take the flack for posting 'basic' info to help the few less familiar w/ DIY.

no reason to buy a stud finder! use a neodymium magnet to find the nails in the studs. you can even leave the magnets there as a marker while you mark your hole placement
