Osprey has released a new version of their popular Porter 46 so the older version has gone on clearance at REI for $96.xx. From what I gather, the new version has a different logo on the front and also has relocated the laptop compartment to the back of the backpack where the backpack straps are.

This is a great back to travel around "onebagging" where you have all your possessions in one carry on bag. This is because this bag sized to meet the cut off most air plane carriers use for carry on luggage.

To see the discount, add the bag to the cart.

this is the largest carryon size per the dimensions, but I try to be early and no one has said anything about the farpoint 55. just make sure the day pack is detached. The only reason I risked the farpoint is because this shell felt to stiff for my liking

Good find OP... look for this to drop even lower as the new version is brought in. But for now it is near the lowest price offered so says ccc.

I prefer the departure and farpoint, but you really can't go wrong with osprey.

Anyone have any experience with this thing? Wondering if it would function okay as a book bag. I have ~40lb of crap that I have to carry every day (can't get it any lighter than that) and every bag I've bought thus far has ended up with the straps torn up and shredded from the weight.

These are very solid bags. The smaller one is on sale too. Both REI and Osprey have excellent warranty coverage if anything goes wrong with the bag.

The pack that's on sale at REI is the one that is sold everywhere. The new 2017 bag is a co-op exclusive for REI (at least for this year)

I've got this exact model. It's a solid pack. I would read the specs to find the maximum load, BUT this is not a great pack for heavy loads (in terms of your back). The hip belt does not have a lot of padding, like it would for a traditional backpacking pack. Osprey packs do have a lifetime warranty which is nice.

Wondering if this could work for camera gear. Sometimes I take short trips for work and would love to have a bag that can hold a day or two worth of clothes my laptop, dslr, spare lenses and all the cables and batteries that go with that. My guess not so well since the main compartment doesn't have separators and idk how I'd carry my tripod. Any thoughts?

This has been as low as $78 on amazon, so not seeing this as a slick deal. However, if you just have to have it without waiting for a better sale...

i'd wait and get the new model. the old fabric ripped fairly consistently and wasn't that comfortable.
