Two DeWalt/Amazon promotions are currently overlapping. First they have a free 2 bare tools with purchase of select starter kits (through May 31st). Second they have $20 off a select DeWalt purchases of $100 or more (starting today through June 18th). Combined it's not a bad deal for 2x 5.0Ah XR batteries, a charger, and two tools:

DEWALT DCF887B 20V MAX XR Li-Ion Brushless 0.25" 3-Speed Impact Driver
DEWALT DCD991B Bare Tool 20V MAX XR Lithium Ion Brushless 3-Speed

Items (3):$543.91

Is the DCD991B (available with the build it yourself kit) better than the DCD791 that comes in the drill/impact combo kit w/ 2AH batteries?

Looks to be a great deal as the 1 battery set for a DCD991 drill is $279 itself. The DCD791 drill w/1 battery set is $199.

The DCD991B is a hammer drill - used for masonry. The DCD791 doesn't have this function.

My reading error...

So looks like with a $50 off coupon on Lowes for this kit: https://www.lowes.com/pd/DEWALT-2...1000021589 which takes it to $209 plus tax.

Then the 5AH battery build it yourself kit is $279 before tax So a $70 upgrade to get the 5AH batteries... Wonder if it'd be worthwhile to get the regular 2AH kit, sell off the batteries and buy 5AH batteries?

The DCD991 is a standard drill/driver, not a hammer drill. It's their "best" drill/driver.

The DCD996 is the hammer drill and rarely part of any of these combinations, which is unfortunate because that's what I actually want (have done some concrete drilling in the past) but being realistic I shouldn't need it.

The drill/driver in that combo from Lowe's is a DCD771 as opposed to the DCD991. The 991 is overall a better tool including 3 speeds vs 2 and a all metal transmission. If it's just for occasional work then it won't matter but if you are going to use it a lot (building a deck, etc) then you are better off with the 991. Plus it would be hard to make up your money selling the 2 Ah batteries and buying the 5's.

Looking at the details in that Lowes combo kit, I'm seeing the drill is the DCD791

"Kit includes: DCD791 20-volt max XR Li-ion compact brushless 1/2-in drill/driver, DCF887 20-volt max XR Li-ion brushless 1/4-in impact driver, 2 DCB203 20-volt max XR Li-ion batteries (2.0-Ah), charger, 2 belt hooks, and contractor bag"

Mistyped, not 771 but 791. Specs I listed are the same still: two speed, doesn't say metal transmission, power output is about half of 991, etc.

I didn't even see that one and I've been looking constantly. My tried and true DeWalt 18V hammer drill is on it's last leg after 15+ years and I need something soon.

Tried it with the xr compact reciprocating saw and xr impact driver but only discounted the impact driver ☹️. I wish I had jumped on this deal when it was two free bare tools plus 30% off when you buy 3 bare tools.

I got the 20v xr oscillating multi tool, 20v circular saw,and jigsaw with the 5.0 battery set for 308$. I plan on flipping the battery set on eBay for 120-150$ so I essentially got all those tools for about 55$ a piece. The deal of a lifetime. They introduced their new tools in June last year so I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to clear inventory.
