Was looking for a cable modem today and was about to buy the Motorola 6141 that is also on clearance for $35 when I saw this Netgear next to it for $49 and snagged it instead.

Very YMMV, but my local store had one clearanced to $29. Bought it just in case I need to replace my other CM500 or as a gift for a family member.

Added pics of my receipt for proof.

Wow! Nicely done. $29 is super slick. I hooked mine up earlier and all 16 downstream channels are bonded compared to 4 from previous arris modem on a 100mbs down xfinity plan.

Why do people still buy their own router or modem? Time Warner/Spectrum no longer allows the 10.00 per month discount for owning them and ATT Uverse makes you use theirs so no discount there either. I guess other cable companies are still giving a discount for owning?
Just a few years ago I bought my own modem to use on AT&T, and it's still working. Xfinity also allows you to use your own retail modem, otherwise you have to rent for $10/mo. I'm sure there are others too.

There's still plenty of need for routers. If something free is provided, it's likely just a modem--and obviously that's not enough for a household.

Good deal. I got one for when I start comcast service next month. What has been both of your experiences using this modem? There are more than a few reviews indicating this modem runs fairly hot, and drops connections and has to be power cycled to fix it.

Has it been reliable? Thanks!

Yes, mine has been pretty reliable - I've had it since Aug. 2015 - and I can't remember the last time I actually had to reset or power cycle it. It sits in an open entertainment center with plenty of airflow and I can't remember it ever being hot. Using mine with TWC/Spectrum 200MB down/20MB up plan and I consistently see ~230.

Previous to this I had a Motorola SB6121, SB6141, and SBG6580.

Because not everyone uses those isp companies?

I've read that some ISP provided modems don't allow for 16 downstream channels, can't confirm this. Hoping someone with a Time Warner/Spectrum could confirm, as I'm currently using a owned SB5101 and would like to upgrade. Thanks!

That's what I was wondering ....if other cable companies are still allowing you discounts for buying your own.

I had just bought my sister a modem/router for TW right before they officially became Spectrum. Since sis is staying with TW promo for now, they allowed her to keep the 10.00 discount but as soon as she goes to a Spectrum promo, the 10.00 discount will no longer be.

I wish AT&T would allow me to buy my own but they never have allowed that since I've been using them in past 4 years.

That's about all we have in our area except for WOW.

For most ISPs, using your own modem isn't a special discount. It's just a way to avoid paying modem rental fee. I'm guessing tw/spectrum lumps modem rentals into your monthly bill so it requires applying a discount to your bill instead of just removing an add on fee.
