I can't speak to performance but on iOS the rain machine app is updated far more frequently than the rachio one. (Although the rachio app looks better imo)

I've had the Gen 1 version since it came out. It has worked flawlessly and only cost me $100 after the rebate I received from my local water company. Most people are concerned with it needing the Rachio servers to work, but in all honesty, if they are only around for 10 more years, so what. My computer which consistently costs me $1000 or more is only good for 3 or so years before I kick it to the curb for newer technology. Think of home automation as pretty much the same thing. Every few years it reinvents itself, and the technology conscious will always upgrade.

I just looked at my water providers rebate page... $200 -$50 gift card - $80 rebate = $70... no brainer

I have owned both and either one will get your yard watered and save you a pretty decent amount on your water bill.

My first smart sprinkler system was the rachio gen 1 16-zone and I loved it. I also had consistent internet service at our previous house. Now I live in the country and have less than reliable internet access. I bought the Rainmachine and love the fact that it has a touch screen built into the actual controller. I don't need to have the app running and connected to a server to change or modify things.

Again, both will get you there but I really love the touch screen on the Rainmachine and the fact that it doesn't need constant internet access to function.

For me being able to be at a head and turn the water on and off is a major plus. Rebates from water companies are also a major plus.

Like has been said it is a no brainer. We just had a wet week in Denver the Rachio knew it would rain later in the day a water sensor will let it water an hour before the rain since it does not know the forecast for the week. That is the biggest water saving part, plus unlimited timers for each zone.
