Remember... just because it says "premium" on the bag it doesn't necessarily make it a premium product. I used this black mulch in my yard last year and it was grey and lost most of it's color within a few days.

This brand loses too much colour too fast. I live in MI and my brown lasted about 4 months before it was gray/tan. I switched to the Scott's colourguard (all they sell in S. MI is the finely shredded version) the year after and the colour stays atleast until Winter. Doesn't even look too bad the next year (if you want to skip years)

Unless they've changed how they dye it in the past 4 years, I'd only recommend it because of price and for mulching areas you don't look at a lot. (distance?)

This kind of mulch is shredded used palettes with heavy metal dyes - it's really bad for your soil. It's better to spend a little more for natural mulch - cypress or pine bark are good. They'll keep colour longer and won't poison the soil.

Yes, exactly. The companies buy used/broken pallets from various sources, run them through a wood chipper, and dye the mulch.

Sheesh, I had no idea. That dye running into your soil, and possibly waterways, can't be a good thing.

After some research it looks like this is common.
