Use CrystalDiskInfo [crystalmark.info] to identify internal hard drive, whether it is RED drive, etc.

How to shuck/take the hard drive out from enclosure with minimal-to-no damage to enclosure: https://drive.google.com/open?id=...WowS1NJLVU

As mentioned use crystaldiskinfo to confirm drive model.

Next use WD Utilities and run a full disk scan, then verify smart info for errors. Mine took a day.

If everything looks good, shuck drive and add lemon and hot sauce to taste.

the reason it's a good deal because of the RED drive inside

Has anyone shucked the new rectangle type enclosure? What drives are inside of those?

Exactly. Some people are complaining they got whites inside of theirs, but I think they have gotten the wrong model? I'm still waiting for my student sale $200/drive WD 8TB Reds (no enclosure), but am hopping on this instead and canceling that order since, a) it's cheaper, and b) I'm tired of their run-around.

The drive that was (with student discount) $200/each direct from WD: https://www.wdc.com/products/inte...l#WD80EFZX

Glad to hear. What are you using for an enclosure? I have a Synology DS413j but thinking of keeping my current drives and buying a new enclosure...

I think I might have killed your crickets... others have reported a "white" being used in other externals besides this as well, but Purple line would go ahead and be another line besides Red that comes in 8TB.

I just want the drive inside since external drives are usually cheaper than buying the same internal capacity drive. Enclosures are like an additional packaging to me. Rip that thing open. MAXIMUM damage to enclosure.
