Char-Griller AKORN 20-in Kamado Charcoal Grill $250 (or $200 w/filler and coupon)

I was dismayed with all the grills at the $200 price point. All of them were thin, wasting a lot of fuel. I almost went with the Home Depot Memorial Day special, but am so glad I didn't.

This Kamado rocks! I'll be able to smoke, bake, and grill in one efficient package. Also, it appears that recent builds have rectified some of the earlier gasket issues (and the build quality of the one I received is great.)

Add a filler item to use a $50 off $250 coupon (if you have one.)

I have had a Char-Griller Akorn for several years now. Unfortunately I'm not the best about covering it up and I think it's time to replace it. With that said I've had it for 4 years now which I think was a good life considering how I treated it. Everything that's been cooked out of it has been amazing. Everyone tells me how good the food is and I consistently tell people it's because of the Akorn. I'm sure I have a little hand in it but seriously this thing rocks. My parents have recently gotten one as well and they also really like it. Very versatile!

Fry's has the one with the cart for $250. I can't seem to find the 50 off 250 coupon so I think I will go that route.

How is it at holding temps from 225 - 275 for low n slow? Does it require mods?

Purchased mine for $219 from Lowes after $50 coupon about a month ago and can't get enough of it. Have cooked ribs a few times now and amazed at how it will hold ~240 degrees for hours. Have not done any mods.

I'm guessing this isn't the super heavy ceramic version.

Keeping it lower than 220 or so can be a struggle but keeping it in the range you're talking about works out fantastic. Sometimes if I use Pecan wood i have a harder time holding lower temps, but I believe that's the nature of the wood. I've also found that I get loads of smokey flavor out of the meats in less time than a traditional smoker so sometimes I will allow the temps to rise to get a nice grilled/smokey combination and not spend all day waiting for dinner Smilie

This is a good deal. I purchased it at $300 with the 50 off coupon. The smoking stone was on sale last time for half off. If it is, go ahead and grab it, as it really helps keep the surface temp down when it comes to smoking.

Like someone said, I have a hard time keeping the temp down below 250, but it really does hold the heat for several hours. I do 6 hour rib smokes without a problem. Some people swear they get 10-12 hours, but I have not seen that.

Also might want to check into getting the PartyQ Temp Controller [amazon.com] or even the DigiQ (Same company) that maintains the grill at a constant temp.

Works well and definitely preferred for low and slow cooking in a kamado style grill.

And while I now own a ceramic grill, the Akorn is a great introduction to the Kamado world.

What is the advantage of Ceramic grills vs. Weber Kettle family ?

Heat retention mainly.

Heat retention is the big one. Of course, that can also become problematic if you overshoot your temperature as it can take a while to get it back down to your target temp.

I would say durability is the other. While you may have some parts rust due to the elements, the ceramic will hold up well, even uncovered. As someone mentioned previously, the Akorn is prone to rust if left uncovered.
