The 50mm AF-S (best price around $160) is one of the highest rated lenses in overall metrics. FX as well as for DX. This works like a portrait lens on DX. In that it's compression is just enough for pro shots; but not so long as to require excessive anti shake (VR). Smaller than longer focal AF-S primes also. The fast f/1.8 is preferable over slower lenses with VR. Not just for low light; but for action stopping in better light by allowing a much faster shutter. You'll need to focus accurately on target and this will typically have more desired background Bokeh. Of course you can shoot stopped down for bright background clarity also. The fixed prime focal length means one less thing to set while taking pictures. It's better to move with your feet and then it will act sort of like a 35-100mm zoom (50mm to 150mm eqiv crop DX range similarity and with f/1.8). This is not a wide angle nor long tele lens (but it can do some up front stage/play type shots). So you'll use you kit lens or other lens for wider angle shoots instead. It's an easy lens to carry. While not quite as small as the AF version it's AF-S has the focus motor for all Nikon DLSR's. Video shooters would set focus before recording to avoid focus tracking noise. Use AF-P lenses for AF tracking with video. If you are not into people pictures you might like the 35mm DX better for a normal cropped point of view. (with "feet" range around that normal cropped_DX focal ANGLE). f/1.8 Primes are lighter, faster(etc...) and a better value.

Just a heads-up: the new 10-20mm is coming and its tiny and only $307. I understand it is a different lens and quality remains to be seen. But if you are not in a hurry, it doesn't hurt to wait a bit. A cheap wide angle is very attractive, IMO.

Edit: I didn't spell out what's different for the new 10-20mm lens. But as pointed out below by fellow SDers, 10-20 is AF-P lens and only compatible with recent cameras. And it's darker (f/ 4.5), which is no biggie for me since I use my wide angle mostly with small aperture. If you need indoor wide angle (such as real estate photos), you need faster lenses. Again, different lenses for different purposes. The selling points for 10-20 are small and cheap bounce

I just looked for information on the new 10-20mm because I'm interested in that lens and look at compatibility before you buy. It won't work on my D7000.

"These new AF-P lenses only work on camera models originally introduced since about 2013. If your camera is too old, the focus system, even in manual mode, won't work at all, making the lens completely useless with no workaround." from Ken Rockwell's site

So check compatibility before waiting for the lens to be released.

isn't it going to suck in low light? I think I'll go with tokina 11-20mm

In for the 50mm 1.8G, read nothing but good things about it, bargain at that price. Now where's the once in a lifetime deal on the 85mm 1.4?

This is my first post. IDK whether I made anything unknowingly. Even I don't have share button. Suggestion please.
