It seems, the traffic info is only accessed via your smartphone, Unlike older GPS units. (No data plan on your phone no traffic info)

I agree. Traffic is horrible on these units. They require a Bluetooth connection to your phone at all times to work. This means you can't use any other Bluetooth like to connect to your stereo to listen to music from the Internet and have to use the tiny gps speaker as your speaker system for the phone. But traffic still only works when it wants to and is only guaranteed in some major cities. Just returned a similar one to Costco. Android auto destroys this for free. Someone at Garmin should buy a cell phone and drive around some day. It's 2017 they may be surprised at what a phone can do.

That's the reason why there are offline maps too provided by Google maps. Use them when you don't have data plan. No smartphone? These days smartphones are available as low as $10 and can support Google maps.

Right and try a cheap phone service when your on a cross country road trip and you hit the mountains. Bye, bye cell data, there goes your navigation. There is still a place for stand alone GPS units.

There are plenty of offline navigation apps already... google maps allows downloading maps sections and navfree is another one we've tried.

Here WeGo maps has off line maps and free map downloads that covers the world or regions only if needed. Does great when data is gone and gps connects almost instantly on my lg v20.

This is a pretty good unit and totally justified the price. If you are in need of a new car GPS, would definitely recommend it at this price.

If you are purchasing from Best Buy, collect BB gift cards from Rite Aid, and you'll get 20$ worth of Plenti points. That's an additional saving.

If you are purchasing gift cards from Rite Aid, use your Chase Freedom card, and you'll get additional 5% as cashback.

Sweet.. Smilie

I hope the live smartphone traffic is better than the one integrated in the units, because I have one of the older LMT models and doesn't do s#!t down here at the beach. Google is your best friend.
