Free shipping at $100. Can add an overpriced Canon lens hood or filter to get there but anyone know any other way to get free shipping?

You can just google it or check out DPReview or The-Digital-Picture, but it's a vast improvement over the EF 50mm II. While it's meant for a F/F body (as an EF lens), it works just fine on a crop (although it'll seem much tighter due to crop factor).

yeah just wasn't sure if it was the one everyone raves about as a prime lens.

Yes, it is the one. There is no better value. f/1.8 is fast. Personally, I don't own one, because bought a Sigma 30mm f1/.4 EX DC HSM about four years ago and use that for most indoor photography; the 30mm focal length is better for closer quarters than the 50mm (which, in turn, would be better for portraiture).

Edit: Also the 50mm STM wasn't out yet, just the older 50mm II, when I bought my 30mm lens.

That Sigma lens is also around $400. Definitely would prefer a 35 or 40mm focal length but nothing is as cheap as this lens for the speed. BTW, the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is on sale for $220.

If you do any amount of outdoor portraiture you owe it to yourself to get this lens. The background blur (bokeh) is unparalleled when you open it up and still has a nice look even if you stop it down to 2.2 or 2.8 which is a lot better than you get with any kit. This lens plus a cheap popout reflector from amazon (and a trusty assistant to hold it for you) will have you taking pro portraits in no time.

Where exactly did you see it for $220?

If this is still more than you want to pay, I bought this and it's great:

Different brand and doesn't have the STM, but still a great value.
