The 40" Model 20070115 is on sale for $335 - Home Depot [homedepot.com] and Amazon [amazon.com]

Home Depot's price is good through June 21, 2017.

This is Masterbuilt's Gen 2.5. From what I read on the forums and reviews, Gen 1 is good, Gen 2 is bad, and Gen 2.5 is supposed to be good again. However, I see reviews of this model having failures and some have problems with the bluetooth. YMMV.

I was considering the Masterbuilt 30" smoker for $130 from Ace, but I want a window. Yah, it gets dirty & you can't see through it well, but I still want to see the smoke action and change in color of the meat. This model has an internal light which may help visibility a little. I also like the steel material and handle and wheels to easily roll it into the garage for storage. So, for another $80, you get a window and these other features. I'm contemplating this.

any recommendations for a smaller smoker? Don't really plan to use that much and have a small family, so I won't need to cook anything big

For $130, you can get the same size without the yuppie features until June 30th. Instore only though.

I just bought this smoker right before Memorial Day from Lowes for about the same price. Used it twice and works awesome and easy to use. You do pay extra for the window but I'd say it's worth it to me at least.

i'm gonna say having a window is worse, because:

a. you have to clean it regularly
b. it's more expensive
c. it probably is worse for heat retention
d. it is not needed at all for smoking

save that money, and buy a good smoking meat probe thermometer

You won't be seeing the meat through the vent, at least not after a couple uses. Even after cleaning, it fogs up and gets coated in garbage. About the only thing it is useful for is to see if there is condensation in the box, which means it's too humid in there.

The light is on the exterior to help you load and unload at night -- it's not like an oven light. If anything it makes it harder to see through the window because of the reflection.

As for the smoke, you will be able to tell the quality of smoke by seeing it coming out of the vent.

Now, the remote monitor is nice. Mine is an older one with a R/F remote. You can, however, buy thermometers with a remote sensor.

Agree with this one. I have this one from last year and have done brisket, pork shoulders, wings, whole turkey and all come out delicious and simple to manage. Set the temp and keep water in it. That's about all you need. No window or Bluetooth gadgets. Plus this one is insulated. Not sure the window units are. It will hold temps perfect and all you really need is a digital thermometer from Wallyworld for $5 to check at required times. Save some money and get the non window version. It will just get messy anyways.

This is exactly right. I've got the window and the heat takes longer to build and during smoking you can't see inside the smoker at all. It's pointless.

OP has it right. Even if you don't value the window, having Bluetooth, handle, and wheels is very convenient.

Sure, charcoal smokers and random end of season smokers. Although this one has 4 shelves (I have it). I thought maybe the 40 was the way to go but am exceedingly happy with the 30

The app works great, but while it includes the ability to monitor both the smoker temp and meat temp via the app, it does not sound an alarm at a target temp.
