Lowes has the Dewalt D55146 4.5 gal Air Compressor [lowes.com] for $269.10. This is lower then at :

Homedepot [homedepot.com] $299

or

Amazon [amazon.com] $319.99

Krogers is offering Lowes gifts cards at a 10% discount see thread

And of course you all know how to get a 10% off code.

Minimum discount looks like this: $269.10 - $26.10 (10% off code) = $243.00 - $20(2) $100 cards from Krogers) = $223

How you want to handle the remaining $43 is up to you. Right now CardCash(yeah some hate them I've always had good luck) has Lowes ecards at an average of 2.62% off with an additional 5% with Code: SUMMERDAYS. Or you could buy 3 GC's from Krogers and get some other stuff. Additionally the cashback site I use is giving 2.5%. Maybe you'll share if you know a site thats gives a higher percent.

I know this is a bit confusing for some but here goes If you just use the 10% and the Krogers GCs your cash outlay is $180 + $43 = $223

If you go with a ecard then you pay $39.78 and get $43 so cash outlay is now $180 + 39.78 = $219.78. If you do a click thru site like mine then you would get back $6.73 making your final cost $213.05 + tax

3 camels shows the lowest price this compressor was available for was $242.99 on May 15, 2013.

Make a note: Lowes has the wrong description in the header. Read below in the description section:
"200-PSI max tank storage pressure provides a user with 80% more usable air than the industry leader" and it has a 4.5 gallon tank

Specs on Dewalt's site [dewalt.com]

4.5 stars in reviews on both Amazon and Homedepot. Delivers 5 SCFM at 90 PSI.

Stores arent loaded with these and they can't be ordered shipped. Most stores if they have stock have 2-3 on hand and one of those might be the display so YMMV.

they killed those at the beginning of June. Now it's just 15 off 50, 20 off 100, and 10%.

I don't think this is online only. I almost bit in my local lowes earlier this week. This compressor was discounted to $299, and they have big signs posted for 10% off all in stock dewalt compressors.

What makes this worth $150 more than the typical $99 pancake compressors (rigid, porter cable, bostitch, dewalt, etc)?

Yeah, no... it's not. Lowe's title is wrong and if you'd bothered to read this thread or check into things a little bit you'd have realised that.

Most people tend to look at PSI and judge based on that. While PSI is important it is merely one part of the equation and it is usually not the problem.

A better compressor has a higher SCFM. In simple terms, The higher SCFM, the more tools you can run without issues (impact wrench, sander, grinder, polisher, etc). Each tool typically have a minimum SCFM rating. Most of your typical pancake compressors have a low SCFM where you can't run any/most of the tools I used in my example above. Pankace compressors are good for portability and light uses, that's about it.

5 CFM at 90psi is pretty darn good for such a small tank. I don't think it's that slick at $220 except maybe for the form factor.

I have this compressor and I've been happy with it. It has some downsides, the switch is in a stupid location, the drain is at a bad angle to get the water out and it's oil free. To me, oil free means it will only last a few years. Also, it can't run in the vertical position. It has dual outputs and keeps up with my nailers no issue. 5 SCFM is impressive for a compressor this size.

I paid more than this for mine last year.
