3 year warranty. Decent entry-level receiver (technically it's not entry level, but it's priced like one and it's not really a higher-end model either). I just picked up an open box model for $240 (you can order online but not available for shipping) for my new 4K TV - all my other HT receivers are pre-4K. I wouldn't build a dedicated theater around it, and it lacks multi-zone capability, but it's not bad for this price. Includes Chromecast [pioneer-audiovisual.com] after a software update, but doesn't specify whether it's standard or 4K Chromecast.

If it's actually 980W or 140W per channel this is a great deal.

It's not, the power supply isn't big enough to supply that amount of power continuously (luckily you probably don't need it). But if this is used with modern speakers in a typical room then you'll have no problems, even if you like to listen loud.

I saw this last night, and from a quick glance of the features apart from the warranty, I think the Onkyo TX-NR656 for $320 ($20 more) from Best Buy.com is a better amplifier with more features. Am I wrong about that?

Yes, it is, if you can find one - it's on clearance and only one store in my area had it. Not available for shipping, either. Keep in mind that there have recently been issues with the reliability of Onkyo receivers.

Thanks. I guess it's good I ordered one last week. It just showed up and I haven't opened it. Then I saw this and wondered about it, but like you said the 656 should be superior to this Pioneer except possibly reliability. Yet there are several people who have posted that Onkyo has fixed their HDMI reliability problems and the 656 and onward should be less flaky.

BTW, if the 656 drops in price on Best Buy's web site even though it's on clearance and not available for shipping, is it possible to call up BB.com and get a price match or is clearance exempted from that? Unfortunately you have to log in to see the price.

According to the Best Buy price match policy [bestbuy.com], no. However, you could always do a rebuy and return the original, assuming a store in your area has one.

Thanks. It's a bummer that clearance is excluded from PMs. Last week there was only 1 demo unit available in a 50 mile radius. No new ones anywhere in my area. I could have gotten that demo unit for $238 without remote or anything else if I wanted to make a 25 mile drive, but I decided to pay the extra for a complete new package. I'm sure that one is gone by now.

They own Pioneer Home Electronics (not all of Pioneer); this is true, however, the product lines still appear to be separate. If Onkyo has solved the reliability issues, as mentioned above, then this is not an issue anyway.
