Would this be a decent commute bike (approx 1.5 to 3 miles one way)?

This is more than enough bike for that.

I've seen these and I was impressed for the money. No, it doesn't compare to my old FELT or my current cyclocross, but a fantastic start to road riding IMHO. Upgrade components as they wear out if you get into it.

Just got this for a last minute 50 mile run. Took me the whole day to get the gear shifting set up to an ok level. Make sure you get the spokes tightened because they came super loose. Also the breaks are terrible which is not very safe may need to upgrade those.

Weird to see wrist shifters on a road bike.

Can get at Walmart for $169 regular price, sometimes on sale for $130. I have one, and is a good starter road bike although very heavy. It's a heck of a workout on hills! The brakes are terrible, as another poster said... definitely want to upgrade them ASAP. Other than that, it's a good place to start!

They don't make decent bikes that last forever as they did when I was younger. Bikes today catches a flat easily. Handlebar become loose. Chain keep jumping off track. Problems with gears. I did not have these problems with my bikes 25 years ago. Maybe all these problems occur because we are now too heavy for a regular bike. Or manufactures are using cheaper parts.

I'm just looking for a mountain bike to take around the block a few times with the wife every now and then. I saw that Big 5 has a Huffy and a Kent at around $130 bucks. I have never heard of a KENT, can someone tell me how they compare to a Huffy. I get that either will not be a great bike, but between the two which is better? Thank you.

there is no difference between those two. if you have decent Craigslist in your area there are better deals there. also Walmart's $80 bike is likely no worse.

if you are lucky you can get a comparable bike for $40 from Walmart, but I haven't been able to find one anywhere:

GMC Denali 1 [brickseek.com]

GMC Denali 2 [brickseek.com]
