Some dickhead (mostly government officials and their lawyer) are still saying there is no monopoly in this country.

My bill, dated 6/15/17, has no such mention. Don't assume it is on everyone's bill.

Very simple solution to this for anyone that does get charged: Buy your own modem.

The good news is refurb modems are fairly inexpensive nowadays. Just be sure to get one that is compatible with their service and your speed tier.

Also, when you turn in your old modem be sure to get a receipt saying your did so or they may continue to charge you a monthly fee or charge you for the modem.

I also see that statement in my bill for July, 2017, except mine is to be increased from 100 to 200. Yes, $4.95 modem fee will be charged starting August 2017 for me even I have been an Optimum customer for more than 20 years.

According to the chat I had with their tech, Arris SURFboard SB6183 is compatible with Optimum so I ordered one from Amazon for $67.99 plus tax.

I think this is the reason why my internet speed got faster in these days.
Edit: My recent bill (6/30) also shows that statement.

I agree with Education that any DOCSIS 3.0 modem should work as I don't have Optimum Voice. But Optimum's website only shows those old modems which I cannot find a good price (less than $100). Before I bought Arris SB6381, I verified it with Optimum.

The modem swapping is non eventful. I got my modem yesterday and set it up this morning. I use a computer behind my wifi router. After swapping out the old modem with the new modem, I open Chrome and try to go to cnn.com. Optimum's procedure guides me through to change the modem. What I need are account #, last name and phone number.

I have not seen the speed increase yet. My account online says Optimum 200 but speedtest.net shows me only 110/36. Below is the statement on my bill:

The bpu really dropped the ball here. They should have made it a condition of approval that modem fees wouldn't be charged. Instead all they got was no data caps for 3 yrs. looks the party will end in 2019.
