Edit: It appears you are required to pay for a month of service starting at $40, so this isn't really a good deal unless you are upgrading (assuming you can activate this on an existing prepaid line, I'm not able to validate that)

previously some verizon prepaid phones would be unlocked as long as you didn't power it on with a verizon sim card so they could be used on gsm carriers, but the band support could be limited even in that case.

It's a decent deal if you're stuck with Verizon.

I am waiting on the unlocked Moto E4 - universal carrier unlocked model but am curious on the unlock policy for this model for use by family member who uses a Verizon MVNO ( Boom Mobile )

Verizon Wireless device unlocking policy - http://www.verizon.com/about/cons...ing-policy

What is the unlocking policy on this one ? Which one applies - 12 months of service or a "ransom" of $ X ?

Neither. Verizon's policy requires its prepaid phones to be active for 1 month (minimum of $40 plan) on Verizon before they'll whitelist the IMEI for use on one of their MVNOs.

Verizon doesn't SIM lock its phones because it's a CDMA carrier - which uses a whitelist (phones are explicitly allowed) - instead of a GSM carrier (all phones are allowed with a valid SIM, unless explicitly blacklisted).

And before anyone asks: you generally cannot unlock the bootloader on a Motorola phone used on Verizon. Because Verizon sucks.

I wonder if the hardware is really different or the ROM is just disabling those other bands. We'll probably never know of course, unless someone unlocks the bootloader, which isn't likely to happen as stated above.

I did this last year, snagged the G4 play (verizon pre paid model) for use on totalwireless (verizon MVNO). Bought an unlock code on ebay and it works fine on said MVNO. Note, this process would not activate a new sim card, had to use an already active totalwireless sim card and swap it into this phone for it to work.

I'm an existing Verizon Prepaid customer with a Moto 4 g Play. I tried ordering this online, but it forces me to either select a new number or port a number from another carrier. Chat is not available and I don't feel like sitting on hold. Does anyone know how to order this if you're an existing customer?
Thanks, and thanks OP.
