You loose a lot of functionality with the hacks. Cheaper and better to use $20 to buy an android phone to use as a wifi cam.

I disagree, you gain a lot since most of the users Ive talked to about these dont want the features that are built in. I think the largest userbase of these are the gadget hackers and the more advanced users (who are not scared off by the term SSH).

No, grandma should not buy these with the expectation of "hacking" them and using them.

I disagree with your disagreement. You lose video recording and night vision. What do you "gain"? The functions it should already have. So what really are you gaining?

You can get everything you "gain" using free software on a cheap smartphone.

Here's the link: https://www.zapals.com/xiaomi-xia...ction.html

I haven't had good luck using $20 phones as cameras. I already have two of these and use the Mi Home app. They work fine for watching my dog throughout the day.

When I tried mounting one under the eave of my house (magnetic base made his really easy) it didn't like the weak wi-fi signal and had recording issues. Inside the house they work great.

You get what you pay for.

I bought one and hacked to use it as a IP cam.

It works, but the video transfer is intermittent. It works for 10s and goes black. Then back on, and goes black. Never seen such behavior with other IP cams I have.

Perhaps I got a defective one.

I did not lose video recording, I lost video recording via the china-app. I then gained video recording via zoneMINDER (edited). I gained the ability to view my cameras on my phone, my computer, give out access to it to 10000 other people.

I gained the ability to change the framerate. I gained the ability to change the resolution. I gained the ability to have 100% control over the night vision (which I did not lose like you stated), the colors, and just about every other setting on the camera. The app cannot change these settings.

I can now record 1000 hours worth of video to HP GL380 G6 server that is sitting in my closet. The app cannot record 1000 hours of video.

I am now able to setup custom alarms based on the motion detection, instead of just the simple push notification that the app provides.

Mine does the same thing - keeps going black and then randomly comes back on again...

Sure - but I think you have to be very tech savvy to accomplish this... no easy app where you can just toggle or click your settings/options...

Good and sad to hear that you could reproduce it. Lottery failed.

Well, as I said earlier, you need to have basic understanding and knowledge of SSH, but I also mentioned its more for advanced users.

Are you using Zonealarm or Zoneminder?

LOL! I figured. I was like... hmmm zone alarm now has monitoring software? I think I am going to setup a Linux server and run zoneminder, was it crazy hard to setup. or pretty painless when you hack the camera and install zoneminder on the server?
