Credit to bb182 and qwe1234 from this thread: https://slickdeals.net/f/10284892-staples-weekly-ad-paper-50cent-ar-ac-4-ream-case-2-ar-ac-in-store-6-25-7-1?v=1. The rewards department stated there will be email blasts about the rewards no longer being applied for online/phone orders as of 7/1/17, so watch your emails for more details.

I suggest reading all relevant posts in that thread but here are links to a couple of the most pertinent posts:
https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=101625296&postcount=43 (link not specific)
https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=101636892&postcount=47 (has the screenshots, and coded link)

Once again Staples is cutting back on benefits. This may affect you or may not depending on your use of Staples of course. I am just trying to provide the information to help others not scratch their heads if they typically disregard the emails they send ordinarily like I do. Plus no way to know how they will try to spin this to make it sound like they are doing us a favor, let alone the actual disclosure they will provide...

There is already another thread regarding the new online free shipping policy being changed which has rolled out already prematurely. https://slickdeals.net/f/10287268-staples-policy-for-shipping-fees-under-49-99-for-rewards-members-is-changing-july-1st-in-effect-for-some-currently
CSR's can refund it if you complain though, up until July 1st.

I would not be shocked if all of these policies already are in effect prematurely. So you might want to track your online/phone/kiosk spends between now and then if you care to fight for your rewards from online orders in the interim if no rewards post.

They just got bought by a PE firm - I expect things to get even worse from here. This is going to be the next circuit city.

Link [google.com]to a google search so you can pick any of the articles about it. Repped for the info. ETA of the deal being completed is Dec, 2017.

I started a PSA thread on your behalf since I don't see this news posted as a thread yet.

Staples as we know it is dying....

I didn't get rewards for a purchase I made from may and not only that but it did not count towards the amount i've spent in the year. Hitting that $1000 is going to be a challenge now.

To be fair Staples has been on life support for a while now. Who would ever shop at this place without the ink rewards? I only go there to purchase things with ink rewards and I need to pricematch virtually every item in my cart. Their execution is horrendous vs Amazon in terms of website function, inventory, customer service, and delivery.

I have not done any of the work on the buyout but I would guess the plan here is to gut the company and sell off assets. I'm not sure that is worth 7B - but to think that they can resurrect staples is completely insane. Not even WalMart would buy these guys and they are desperately trying to purchase any retail assets that they think can help them compete with Amazon (jet.com, modcloth, bonobos, etc)

I was going to attempt to buy 1000 dollars worth of stuff to get Premier next year but honestly I don't think it is worth it because they are probably going to eliminate rewards and ink recycling once this PE firm gets in there and starts shuffling the deck chairs.

There are still lots of rebate deals which is a much better motivation than only ink recycling. That may not hold true for much longer though.

One site says the Seattle PE firm took the gamble of the acquisition based on Staples' high cash flow and internet sales orders/delivery strength from businesses. Confused

AFAIK their cash flow is largely based on pre-rebate gross income and their prices to businesses aren't anything to write home over. With the PM and coupons and losses in store they will likely at least shave this all down and or they can kill the stores off completely (according to one article).

Right that they are circling the drain a bit so far and they are inching closer and closer to the whirlpool of the drain. I imagine as the talks were progressing they were mandated to trim some fat which they have been doing quite a bit lately with rebate potential and then the fraud caused more of a hassle which will curtail more of us from dealing with the extra work needed for tiny rebate cards. I hope they can make the activation simpler but not holding my breath for that.

I wrote Staples off as soon as they killed the $10/$50s on sale/rebate items and even more so when they started pro-rating a coupon requiring separate transactions, so they stopped being a good company to me last year. I'm glad I have a nice paper fort as I don't have plans to buy any more paper once Staples kills all paper deals (even the penny reams) eventually when they get taken over. I wouldn't even bother with their mediocre deals this or last week... 92 bright odd-sized reams. Pretty much I've only bought penny reams and some blue half cases this year.

I do believe what others are saying that these steps Staples has taken since mid-late last year are steps to cut the financial losses. I know businesses are their best customers because they charge them much higher prices. One of my prior jobs even told me they have a contract with Staples and aren't allowed to buy office supplies from anyone else. Wow! Supposedly they get some rebate/credit at the end of the year, but talk about wannabe monopoly.

The end point of all this is clear: penny reams will disappear, coupons and rebates will be very scarce, you'll probably never see paper reams for less than $1 each except a few times per year. Rewards will be very restricted. Most SDers will give up on Staples and Staples will be mostly where business people go because they get to deduct some of their business expenses. Basically SDers to Staples are like the "devil customers" to Best Buy. So stores want to drive the cheapskates like us away and cater to the rich/too busy to care about money types. And this has nothing to do with people posting or discussing deals. This was going to happen eventually regardless, just as one day in the near future we will walk into Best Buy, Target and Walmart and probably only see 1 aisle or a few endcaps of recent release DVDs and Blu-rays. Some day the only way to buy older, cheaper movies will be online. Only the stuff with the highest profit margins will be available at most retailers, and BF will suck worse every year.

Getting off my soapbox now. To save everyone time, I'll post your response to the above:

Yep. I follow and am interested in discussions regarding many things including places I'm not a member (such as The Church of Costco) or places I rarely visit (such as Staples).

Any reasonable SD alternative to Staples now that the online orders won't accrue rewards?

wait so does this mean anyone who was in the plus bracket is no longer?. and you will have to recycle only 10 not 20?. This is the confusing part for me. is it me or is this week 2 of the non 1 cent after rebate reams.. meaning staples finally killed off penny reams once and for all???.

Who knows? I don't.
No emails received yet, but I am Premier status. Hopefully the dust will settle and all will be revealed.

The play for them is essentially their corporate business as others have mentioned. They already planning for closing of most of the retail stores in all likelyhood. I stopped shopping there when they implemented coupons for regular price only. They really can't afford "customers" from SD as they lost money on every sale. The only time they made money from me was when I had to print 100 or so color pages at insane pricing.

I don't know about this "Staples has been on life support for a while now..." talk. Staples has already kicked virtually the entire rest of the big box office supply companies to the curb. Just because they're killing the SD constituency, doesn't mean that they'll now wither and die.

Edit
From reading one of the articles linked above, I do see that the OD merger got denied (not really a surprise, since it constituted a consolidation of the entire industry into one company) and clearly the market is shrinking, but a smaller pie doesn't mean no pie.
