and a terrible deal for a very mediocre sub unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY need built in wireless.

There's a slew of 12" subs in the 100ish to 200ish buck range that crush this thing.

$200 isnt amazing but not awful for having built in wireless.

Heard one recently and actually for a 10" lower powered sub I was pretty impressed by it. Expected much less. Hit pretty hard and low for a 10" 150-300w klipsch sub.

I think it sounds cleaner and is made better than the $200 sub12-HG (which i own and loved but the sub has deteriorated badly after 1 year )

less violent / less boomy than the $180 12" polk psw505 that i love as well

Crushes the dayton stuff and the $100 polk psw10 for sure. But those are also
Alot less $$

150W RMS and a frequency response of 32-120Hz.

So not really sure how you found it played surprisingly deep unless you got some really... uncommon... room gain....or your comparison was a system without any sub at all...

Comparing to Dayton you you can buy two 120w Dayton 1200s with a frequency response spec down to 24Hz for about the cost of one of these... or one Dayton 1500 with the same sustained power and again plays deeper (though I'd take the 2 12s over the 1 15 in most situations)

But even ignoring that- the Jamo J112 (which is virtually identical to the Klispch R-112) is a vastly more capable sub than all of the above for around the same price if you can stand to run one sub cable instead of going wireless.... double the power of this thing and plays both deeper and louder.

Errr.... no.

Don't get me wrong, they make excellent subwoofers.

But they're definitely not the best bang/buck in the genre.

That's unquestionably the R-115SW when Frys has it on sale for $399, which is about 95% as good as the higher end subs Hsu charges $900+ for.... you could get two of the R-115s for less than one Hsu high end sub and beat it in every measurement you could think of.

Fry's has the 12" model R-12SW on sale w/ today's code for $197. To my surprise, it was available for Free Shipping too.

That one isn't... .terrific... either... better than this one (though without wireless) but not by a ton.... and it's a significant step down from the Jamo J112 (or its brother the Klipsch R-112SW) both of which have been available around $220 (the Jamo still is if you're ok getting a white one- I think a dark woodgrain one is like 10-20 bucks more)

Picked up one of these at Best Buy today to add to my my anemic Polk PsW108. Traded in an iPad and got $165 for it, so I ended up paying only $50.99 after sales tax and the trade in credit. Honestly, there are certainly better subs out there, but for a lot of people who don't want to rattle the windows and just want clean, punchy bass $199 is a really good value for this sub. It sounds way better on my basement theater then it sounded in the store.

This is a common misunderstanding.

Getting a better sub is much less about being LOUDER and about being deeper.

You can get an even cheaper crap sub that will "rattle windows" but it won't play shit under like 35Hz

The whole point of having a sub is to play the lower frequencies that your normal speakers can't play. So getting one that doesn't even go half an octave lower than your normal speakers isn't really doing a lot for you.

If you want more sound at 60Hz just adjust your normal speakers to have a peak there.

The cheap (but very well regarded) Pioneer FS52 towers for example play down to 40Hz before dropping off output.

The specs on this sub only show it going down to 32Hz.

That's not getting much extra range for $200.

One reason folks often discuss a "true 20hz" sub is that 20Hz is commonly considered the lowest notes the average human can hear... so a 20Hz sub in your system insures you can play the full range of audible sound.

(though there's also other benefits to a sub that plays that low or lower than that- for tactile feel- the difference as I've described it between hearing a plane crash and feeling like you're IN a plane crash)

But traditionally genuine 20Hz capable subs were expensive ($500 for a small one, 800 and up for ones that could handle medium sized or larger rooms)- so the next best alternative were the "cheaper" ones that could play down into the mid 20Hz range at least.

This sub can't even do that.

Frys currently has the R-112SW, which can do that on sale for $299 with wireless kit.... so all better options to this deal are:

If you MUST HAVE wireless for some weird reason- get the R-112SW deal. yes it's $100 more, it's also a way better sub- several steps up in their sub line.

If you do NOT require wireless than either get the R-112SW deal and resell the wireless kit, which gets you back most of the price difference between that deal and this one
OR
Buy the Jamo J112 on ebay for $220 shipped if you are ok with a white sub- it's basically the same sub as the R-112SW and again way better than this one.

Or if you can wait and want a genuine no-shit sub-20Hz sub, wait for Frys to run the R-115SW sale again which will crush any of the other subs mentioned for $399 WITH WIRELESS KIT (so nearer $325-350 if you resell the kit) and performs on par with other $800 ID subs.

It's not a misunderstanding that it sounds better than what I had, and a lot of people feel this sub is good value for $199. Sure, you can get the 12" for 50% more, but not all of us need it, or would even be able to fully utilize it. I've got plenty of bass now, and I'm content with MY purchase, so save the condescending, arrogant remarks for a different forum. For me, only spending $50 out of pocket, including tax, and not having to run a cable was truly a slick deal. But hey, maybe if you wrote another 2000 word essay, you might save the world from bad audio!

Except you can get the Jamo version of the 12 for $20 more.

Not really sure what you mean by "able to utilize it"

the 12 plays notes the 10 can't.

Again you seem to be confusing "louder" with "deeper"

Unless you never ever play any content under ~32 Hz your "wouldn't use it" comment makes no sense.

So pretty much if you only listen to music without deep bass, and only watch rom-coms and reality TV shows that might be correct... otherwise not so much.

You have plenty of bass from 30hz and up (for a certain definition of plenty I guess)

You don't have any useful below that (unless you're listening in a closet or something and getting very abnormal room gain)

That's the point.

It's not about volume, it's about depth.

Your 10" sub is incapable of playing an entire part of most soundtracks

You are not hearing notes that exist because what you own doesn't play them... so you literally don't realize what you're missing.

See above.

No doubt it's better than your last sub, Your last sub was terrible

Here's the specs on your last sub-

Lower and Upper -3dB Limits: 40 Hz → 160 kHz

that's barely even a sub at all.

This new one you got? It plays down to 32Hz officially.

That's almost half an octave lower.

You noticed notes you could never hear before, and you're happy to have em, right?

Guess what the R-112 or Jamo J112 does?

It plays another entire range of notes lower than the new one you got. Almost the same extra amount in fact.

You'd see the same sort of improvement again by moving to it. It's that much better. For 20 bucks more in the case of the Jamo.

I'm sorry you find facts condescending.

Maybe if you do more research first next time folks won't have to explain this stuff to you after the sale? Ha ha

well, not in your case I suspect. Maybe it'll help someone else more willing to understand this stuff though Smilie

I took it back to Best Buy today because they had another trade in promotion that allowed me to dump an old crappy 1st gen chrome book for $75 - the extra $75 allowed me to upgrade to the BIC Acoustech H-100 II, $249 normal retail price, so not on sale, but better than the Klipsch I returned. - and I still have $21 store credit on a BB gc from the exchange.

It's no SVS or Velodyne, and because I was dealing with Best Buy store credit, my options were limited to what they carry. I only spent $50 put of pocket for this endeavor, and ended up with a $21 gift card and the BIC sub will be delivered in 2 days. Hope it's worth all the hassle of returning the Klipsch.
