What is the difference between "My Passport" & "Element" external hard drives and which one is superior?

They're asking whether or not you can shuck the casing and use the drive inside the casing as an internal drive. Some external drives allow you to do this, others won't let you crack open the case (easily, at least) or they have a special USB connection soldered directly to the drive itself.

Thanks! Was hoping to save a little over the going rate at Amazon, and this did the trick.

Anyone knows whether you can use it as an internal drive for laptops? What's the thickness of the drive itself?

Should I get this? Or is a better deal to be had elsewhere? I'm not in a hurry to buy one.

It depends what zip code you are living at , e.g. 19067 has plenty available around

No, not possible. This is an external drive. It also uses USB which is not an internal connection port you'd ever find inside a computer. That is either SATA or eSATA.
