The guys at https://www.protoolreviews.com/to...out/21505/ did a pretty nice shootout of about a dozen cordless trimmers last winter. The top 3 were the Makita X2, the Husqvarna 536L and the Ego 56V.

FWIW, their rankings were:
#11 Kobalt 80V
#10 Worx 56V
#9 Ryobi 40V
#8 Echo 58V
#7 Dewalt 40V
#6 Oregon 40V
#5 Greenworks 80V
#4 Stihl FSA-90 36V
#3 Makita 18V X2
#2 Husqvarna 536L 36V
#1 Ego 56V

Good info. Goes to show that you can't judge a tool by its battery voltage alone.

This is a pretty good deal. It's one of the few cordless string trimmers that's reversible so you can keep it from throwing debris in your face.

If I had other 18V Makita gear, I'd probably jump on this but sadly I have a lot of "red" tools...

Ugh, got Makita tools and got Greenwork lawn tools.

Need a string trimmer, but not sure which one to get. This one is $350, while the Greenworks 80V one is less than $150.

Decisions Decisions lol

I just bought this from Acme tools a couple of days ago for 360.00. It's a Makita promotion and if you don't need a string trimmer there are also bundles centered around their chainsaw and blower.

Value wise this is one of the best ways to get on the Makita battery system. The String Trimmer alone is 250 dollars and the grinder alone is 150 dollars. The 2 5.0 batteries and the dual charger are just cake.

For those who care, there is no case or anything included with the tools, just some light sack (not a tool bag) that the unassembled string trimmer parts were in. The grinder comes in it's own box within the string trimmer box. The dual charger is very hefty and seems very well built. The Grinder comes with a grinding wheel and a cutoff wheel.

Yeah, you're right. I just assumed this was bundled with the grinder because that's the promotion that Makita is doing. This price without the grinder is definately not slick and you should look for the bundle including it. Acme worked great for me since there was no tax and free shipping and it got to my door in a couple of days.

Got the string trimmer + grinder deal for $360.
Thanks for the heads up since I needed both.

Just curious... how does the 18volt power compare to the 40v or 80v offered with other brands?

FWIW: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/b...-trimmers/

Ego is their pick as well. I I have the ego blower and it is fantastic. I used to mow commercially and although electric wouldn't cut it for all day use, this thing is as powerful or more than my Stihl BG – 55. I believe it moves more CFM on the turbo setting. I can tell you that my Stihl sits on the shelf now and I haven't used it yet this year

While I understand makita =quality, I can picture a person trimming yard with it while envious neighbor trims with his $70 black and Decker. Similar to kid with low end Lg phone Vs kid with iPhone. In the end both get the job done, but someone paid more 4 status.
