I think this unit would be fine for Xbox storage. The WD Blue drive should perform adequately for that, as long as you turn off your Xbox when not in use. If you leave your console always on, the external hard drive will probably stay on and spinning.

That is where the Red drives shine... always on, 24X7 operation (it is what they are designed for). The Blue drives are designed as regular hard drives hooked up to a PC (power up/spin up when PC up on, normal amounts of data transfer, etc, and so forth).

Just bought 2, warranty start date is July 3, 2017 for both. Will update if they are Red or other models

EDIT: Both drives showed up in CrystalDiskInfo as WD40EZRZ (WD Blue 4TB)

Unless WD decided to change the hard drive, it has the red inside.

No,no,no. Not any more.

I picked up two of these for my Freenas box during the $90 sale back in May. Both were Red's. I picked another for $100 for a spare drive when on sale in June. It was definitely a BLUE drive then.

It seems that WD has ramped up production of 4TB blue drives and no longer needs to put Red's in to fill production quotas.

Buyer beware. My guess is that probably most, if not all, of Best Buy's inventory of this external HD with a Red inside is gone by now.

Just trying to help avoid my hard drive heartache for fellow SDer's!!

red is higher quality, designed for NAS use, always on kind of stuff

blue is basically the generic consumer model

Do you happen to know how many years of warranty I get with this product?

if you plan on leaving the hd on 24/7, then red is good choice,
otherwise, red is bad choice if you plan on powering it up once in awhile as one day, due to it's nas nature, it will never power up again!
