Wondering the same thing...

Edit:

I read on a tmobile forum that it is locked to SM for 12 months... So, I guess not?

I had this phone on MetroPCS for about a year. I don't use many apps, but just the Google Apps and a few others that cannot be moved to the SD card fill the phone to the point of incessant full capacity warnings.

Otherwise really not a terrible phone performancewise.

Am I missing something here, these phones, (there are several now I see, LG X Style, etc) are all under $30 with a month of service? that's pretty great for those older people who may not use their phones much; my step father being one. He lost his hearing in one ear entirely in Vietnam and he's hard of hearing in the other, with 30% hearing loss, so a phone like this might work. I hate his flip phone because I can't send him pics of his grandson. This would certainly fix that issue.

And for anyone who has issues with not getting the proper data speeds, be sure the APN settings are correct in the phone.

Check the reviews of Simple Mobile. You may not be too thrilled to invest in this phone that requires at least 6 months of Simple Mobile plan in order to use it with another carrier.

But, on the other hand, if you can arrange for your father to have internet service and wifi, then setting up a free email account that serves notifications that he's received an email is easy. You might consider making the email account exclusive to family so emergencies and other critical info, can be sent along with pics. It should be simple for you to email pics directly from your camera app if you understand APN's and that level of tech.

Horrendously bad 8GB of internal storage, much of which is taken up by preloaded apps and the OS itself.

This might've been alright for 2015 at latest, but now it's two years too obsolete.

Just wanted to echo what a couple of others have already said. The phone storage space is very limited. Out of the 8GB roughly half is available for apps (the other half reserved for the system). And it comes with several hundred megs worth of preloaded apps. There are some apps that can be moved (partially) to the SD but space still fills up fast.

The On5 does run Marshmallow BUT Samsung intentionally disabled adoptable storage on it. You CAN root the phone and re-enable adoptable storage or use something link link2SD, as well as clean up some bloatware. Rooting it is a bit more convoluted than other models though.
