Not necessarily. This is designed to work with Dell machines, but can interface with non-Dell after a firmware flash, BUT that flash needs to be initiated from a Dell machine, and then it still may not operate consistently. I just read about this - and concluded it wasn't worth the effort.

SOURCE: Research on NewEgg, Amazon, and Dell support site.

Link? This looks like a standard Displaylink dock and I can't find anything to support your claim.

Here's a link that supports that it works with another laptop make: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Leno...-p/3355101

My organization bought 10 of this exact dock straight from Dell and it works fine on Lenovo laptops. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 4-1580 G7 to be exact. No flashing or anything.

This looks like a great price, better than anything i can find even on offer up locally. If i wanted to use HDMI for both monitors, could i use the HDMI on the dock and on the laptop at the same time?

I have the triple video version. I use my computers hdmi output and a separate usb to video adapter on top of this and have 5 24" screens hooked up to a dell laptop. 2 of the screens are also hooked up to a KVM and a separate computer that I can switch back and forth between. I have little to no issues out of the setup and am really happy I can use 5 screens on my laptop. Then when I travel I can simply unplug the laptop and take it with me if I need to work else I just take my smaller laptop. These seem to work quite well and are super useful if you need more screens and other things hooked up.

So I have no axe here - I don't own the dock or have strong feelings about Dell - but I did some quick research in my quest for a good 4k dock. Below are the more relevant support links for my statements. There is a Dell forum link that I'm not finding but it also corroborated these details. I suggest reading through a few of the Amazon or newegg reviews for the D1000 and make your own decision.

Non-Dell firmware install issue:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/custome...B012DT6LIA

Amazon reviews (3.5 stars):
https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Displ...geNumber=3

Driver (for those that want it):
http://www.dell.com/support/home/...egoryId=DK

Regarding the above mentioned "triple video version", perhaps that different model doesn't suffer from the issues of this one? Or perhaps the dock is fine and multiple folks reporting these problems are incompetent? Or perhaps Dell has begun flashing the hardware prior to shipping. Any way, its not something I'd want to advise someone give their non-techie parent. Which was my initial purpose in commenting.

Fair enough. I'm seeing complaints about the driver involved even from Dell users so I think that's likely true either way. Valid watchout, though I think my rebut is that the answer isn't as cut and dried as "It won't work".

I have issue with the overhead of everything through usb. I feel it'd cause unnecessary load with perfectly viable ports.

I've used it with two different laptops for my home office without any issues straight out of the box. One was a 6th gen Toshiba Satellite i5 and now I'm on a Lenovo Yoga 710 Kaby Lake i5. No display issues, though I wish that f.lux worked with DisplayLink. Only issue I've had has been downloading torrents over the ethernet port. It goes crazy and locks it up.

Nice to see a polite dialogue on the interwebs. For what its worth, I too wouldn't consider it as cut and dried as "it wont work". Thats why I never made that claim.
-The question was "This should work with any USB 3.0 laptop, correct?" to which I responded "Not necessarily".
-My other claim was that "it still may not operate consistently" - which I thought was fair. Might work, may not.

I try to keep precise in my words. I think it'd be a better world if we all did so. SlickDeals has some good folks so I try to do my part.

I have a D3100 dock and use it regularly with an older Acer laptop without any issues, and didn't need to flash it. Just had to install the DisplayLink driver.

I know this is for the D1000, but the D3100 reaches $89 or better sometimes, and has dual HDMI, and VGA. IMO, probably better value overall.
