All - or at least the vast majority of - helmets sold by reputable retailers are certified for safety. If you plan to buy bike accessories in addition to a helmet and think you'll spend $49+, check out Nashbar.com's helmet selection [nashbar.com] because they are running a 25% off sitewide promotional for today, along with its usual free shipping. The only negative is that you aren't able to try on the helmet before buying it.

I spent several hundred dollars on bike accessories last month, so it was worth it for me to buy a few different helmets from Nashbar to test, then return the ones I didn't like using their return policy [nashbar.com] that deducts a flat-rate $7.99 on each order return. In my testing of Nashbar prices, which included a random selection of 50 items across different bike categories on 4 different days, at least 60% of the items I checked were less expensive on Nashbar than any other reputable online website when Nashbar is running a sitewide promotion of 25% or 30% off.

If that's too much hassle, go with what jaqnabox suggested:

If you have a Costco membership: Some Costco stores have the men's Bell brand helmet - I think it's the Bell Track - on sale as of last week for $19.99. You may want to call ahead, as not all Costco stores carry bike helmets.

I hope this helps,

OK, so I'm just pointing this out because they are calling it a mountain bike. The price is good BUT if you are looking at purchasing this bike for mountain bike riding I want to bring up some deficiencies that will cost more money in the long run.

1. Fork is on the bottom of the bottom low end. It will work fine for a while but I am positive there is a sticker on there saying it is not for offroad use. It also uses a spring which are usually ideal for 150-175lb person and has no rebound control. Again, OK for a while.

2. 7 speed hub. Simply not enough gears for a hilly area. Fine for fire roads. The main problem with a 7 speed or lower setup is that to upgrade the gears you need a different rear hub so now you need to replace the rear wheel which will run you around $100 just to upgrade. It is better to find an economy bike with a 8 speed or higher rear gearing.

3. Tektro Aries brakes are literally throwaway brakes. They do not brake very well and the calipers will eventually start messing up. Having to replace the brakes at a bike shop will cost you $150 for another cheap set. Just not worth it in the long run.

4. Kenda Bitumen, 700x45c tires... these are not offroad tires. Replacing the tires with cheap mountain bike tires will cost you at least $25 each online or $35 from a bike shop. That's another $50-70 that could have been spent on a better bike from the start.

5. Single bolt seatpost: This thing will drive you insane. The seat will constantly be knocked out of adjustment. A 2 bolt seat post has a better clamp for the seat.

The Medium size will probably work best for you. I'm surprised no one has posted a size guide.

Here's the official one for this bike. (For more information, click here [diamondback.com].)
Small: 5'4" to 5'7"
Medium: 5'7" to 5'10"
Large: 5'10" to 6'1"
Extra Large: 6'1" to 6'4"

I hope this helps,
Tofu Vic

Yes it's a men's bike. Seems like a great deal. $500 bucks everywhere else.

Yes! If she has the right size. My wife and girls all ride mens.

Damn this is a great deal!! Highly recommend this for riding around the hood and light trail riding. They are standard 1.75" tires although the tread is not for sandy trails. More serious riders will get 2"+ with better tread. But this is an outstanding deal. Wish my kids needed upgrades.

Too bad the color isn't ideal. Good deal if you like the color though.

No functional differences between men vs women's bike

I think that technically, the difference is that women of long ago needed the angled bar to get on and off the bike with a dress. Correct my if I'm wrong?

Besides that "functional difference", yes they ride the same.

Women may also have shorter legs on average, but other geometry measurements in the bike matter more than a men/women label.

Depends only the sizing, bike itself should be fine for girl/guy, my wife rides a similar one
