Ouch that's a hefty filter replacement cost, is the square footage covered in product page somewhere?

Edit: • The standard mode of purification capacity up to 330 cubic meters per hour, the purification area can be up to 23.1 - 39.6 square meters
• The super mode of purification capacity up to 380 cubic meters per hour, the purification area can be up to 27.2 - 46.6 square meters

For the price I would rather go with a germ guardian. It can go as low as $60 and the filter replacements can be lower than a dollar each, while covering 150 square feet, the xiaomi is exuberant

I am very interested in getting some sort of filter/purifier for my apartment but it's really hard to understand all the industry terms and technologies out there. For example, how do you know it's good? Is there some sort of meter that constantly tells you how dirty your air is?

What about the Germ Guardian that TonyPTheMC mentions. Is it comparable in terms of technology used? How can it have $1 filters but the Xiaomi use $35 filters? That's a huge discrepancy.

Xiaomi in general is a great company and this air purifier is fantastic. The price a little high on this "deal" especially for the air filters. Of course I bought and use mine in China where air purification is an absolute necessity, so I got Chinese prices. One handy tip is to attach a small fan to the top of a bare filter for additional air purification. I have the xiaomi purifier and three other filter/fan combos in our 1000 sqft apartment. On bad air quality days (over 400 aqi) these keep our apartment at a comfortable 25 aqi. On not so bad days just the xiaomi is sufficient to keep the apartment's aqi in the acceptable range.

Does anyone know if there are generic replacement filter options for this? like if the filter is a standardized shape/size used by other companies too.

@Mark1977 interesting tip. Can you share the other purifiers you use? Anyone have experience with Dyson? Cost/performance/DBI etc...

I have no clue if the Xiaomi is worth it in general, but felt like I should point out that 39.6 square meters is 426 square feet: at least by how this claims to be rated, it's significantly more powerful than the germ guardian in terms of air it can filter.

Also, true HEPA filters for the germ guardian are usually well more than $1 each, at least that I've seen. Most of the super cheap ones I've seen I wouldn't trust to actually be HEPA compliant in terms of filtering quality.

The real savings with the germ guardian is *apparently* (I haven't tried it myself) in buying filtrete (or similar) high quality furnace filters (HEPA or at least MERV 11-13+) and then cutting them down to fit, since you can make 2-4 germ guardian sized filters out of the whole house ones, depending on what you get. Generic sheets of activated carbon filter for that stage are less of a concern, imo, and going cheap there isn't a big issue usually.

Of course, if your ducts are clean, you could just get a high quality furnace filter, stick it in your furnace, and turn the blower fan on rather than buying either of these. Whether it might decrease the blower life is a viable question, but the cost of replacing a furnace blower isn't actually that bad for whole house air filtering.

I don't see this described as having a TRUE Hepa filter.

How do you know it works well anyway? You "feel" better after using it? Or the app gives you a magic number. Apparently China uses lower standard for pm2.5/5 than WHO's so pass.
