So my college daughter wants an Apple laptop and I do have some 529 savings plan money to use. I am NOT an Apple guy ...but, would this one be good for her or would a MacBook Pro be better? She is not an engineer and the majority of the time she would use it for papers, homework, testing, and other various school stuff. Also, I'm sure, lots of social media.
These things are crazy expensive but I told her I'd get her a laptop that she wanted : (
Personally I think a good display is very important and maybe at least 256gb (not 128gb...sheesh)

She should go to the Apple Store or Best Buy and try it. Don't even mention the screen resolution. Have her go on YouTube, etc. if she likes it, get it. Only us geeks care or even notice various screen "issues". Most normal people neither notice, nor care. The MacBook Air is a great laptop if u r after ultimate portability, long battery life and reliability.
I bought mine (and 2 MacBook pros) from these guys... https://www.ebay.com/itm/201960386566

screens on the air are garbage compared to the MacBook or MacBook pro

Thanks...will take her there to look. I don't think ultimate portability is an issue but it should be tough enough to be stuffed into and removed from a backpack several times a day x week x semester and hauled around campus, I am concerned that this Air might be a little flimsy.

The air is solid as a rock. It's not like most plastic windows laptops.

If she doesn't care, it doesn't matter. Are you going to tell Hyundai Sonata drivers who like their cars to buy a 3 series because it's better? Get off the soapbox and realize that most people can't the damn difference between a 128kbps mp3 and a lossless audio file nor see the difference in screen on an Air vs. a Retina screen.

So many people spend hard-earned money on things they think they need? If you don't care or can't perceive a quality difference, why pay more? My wife loves her 2012 Macbook (non-Retina) and hasn't complained once. Is a Retina way better? Sure, for me it is. I don't stare at my 1080p plasma thinking I need a 4k TV...

She will have no need for the pro. I am an engineer and don't need a pro. (anyways, my work computer is a pc laptop lol).

Anyways, go for the 128 gb harddrive. It's not like she will fill it up. And there's a memory card slot which you can just buy a 64gb or 128gb card to go in. or you can buy her a portable 64gb mini usb key she can put on her keychain for transporting documents and files (really useful for when she needs to transfer between laptop and school printer or for a presentation and she can just plug the key into the school computer).

I'm writing this on a late 2010 macbook air. It's still a great computer in 2017 and does everything I need. Also, I can text message from it with imessage, which links 100% to my iphone. That's pretty useful (especially if I lose my phone temporarily).

Finally, I don't understand why I need an IRIS screen or whatever. I'm very happy with my macbook's. Those new laptops look very nice yes, but they seem quite expensive.

May I ask... why macbook? Window does have a lot of functionality that make shool work easier. She can get Student Office for free while in school as well, together with bunch of features that she can only find in Window laptop. I am sure her friends had Window as well.

Everything had its peak and after that it will slow down like crazy, price is the same. I didn't pay much attention to Apple PC, but I just scored a ThinkPad Yoga X1 at $660 OOP while it costed $1500 6 months earlier.

The guy said "Personally I think a good display is very important" so I was replying to him.

Mind your own business. I own and like my air.

The student discount of $100 does NOT apply to this model. Please remove that from the original post. Trying to decide between this older Macbook at $749 or the current one from Apple with the Beats for $849. I don't really care about the Beats, so I am not giving that much value.
