Is there something special about these shoes that they HAVE to be cross lace? They look like regular Sperrys to me. Can't I re-lace them the traditional way?

Yes and no. The cross lace is too short to tie into a bow. Furthermore, (if memory serves) the ends of the cross are stitched in. Good news, the stitch is easy to take out and the lacing can be removed. Bad news, re-lacing boat shoes (with your new laces) can be a pain.
