Looks tempting but then this:

"3 Years Warranty from Reseller"

I am looking to get four 4TB drives for a raid box to be used for media and backup. Anyone have any thoughts?

Toshiba (basically WD since they own them now)
5 Year Manufacturer Warranty. $119

Apparently removed manufacture date from label.
HGST provides a factory warranty on their drives; this doesn't have it.
Shame on Newegg.

Toshiba drives are rated more poorly than HGST and WD drives. HGST has a reputation for being the most reliable HDD according to Backblaze's data. 9,000 drives tested with an annual failure rate of 0.6%.

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/ha...tats-2016/

I am going to call the reseller after work and get the info on these drives since $99 for a new 4 TB is $5/TB below the standard rate of $30/TB.

EDIT: Tried calling CS a few times with no answer... Gonna pull the trigger and say a hailmary I guess.

You should be more clear when you makes statements like that, as WD does not own Toshiba.

My guess is that these are -USED- pulls from data center(s). The seller has decided to gamble and sell them with his own warranty. If there are any claims he will just send you another used one.

Who knows but I see the same drives on Ebay for the same price right now but with 1 year 'seller' warranty.

I bought a similar hard drive from the same seller on Ebay last year. The hard drive ended up been a server pulled hard drive with like 25k hours on it. Also, they actually wiped the SMART data to make the hard drive appeared to be brand new with 0 power on hours. Personally, I won't buy it again from this seller but YMMV.

I purchased 4 of these and they all have May 2015 manufacture dates. Before buying I chatted with Newegg and they confirmed they were new. Though I have not hooked them up yet. Oddly, the sealed static bags say "made in America". So maybe they had those bags added later since they were OEM.

These are HMS5C4040BLE640 like mentioned on BlackBlaze as most reliable. However, BlackBlaze does not specify the exact part number. These are 0F23139, which I was told have different options then the 0F22146 (that I have also seen for sale). I called HGST to ask the different, but they have not gotten back to me. Anyhow, looks like good stuff.

This is concerning.

as stated goHardDrive sells drives as "refurbed" and w/o that designation.
if you order the latter - and get one that was wiped - you have recourse and should return immediately
