I set mine up just like this video and it works perfectly. Mine is under a covered porchlike the video. I'm not sure how it would hold up fully exposed. I wished Yi would come out with an outdoor version soon. I'd buy 2 or 3 more.

Put thieves at ease by going completely dark, and install a couple of good night cameras, with 940nm bulbs 'illuminating' the area.

Most pro thieves will be masked anyway, so if you must have your vehicle/valuables in an exposed area, do the opposite of what they expect and target the probability that they'll slip-up by feeling 'freer' and expose their face (and/or a unique identifying marks). A couple of well-angled 4mp cams, as well as a couple of 940nm bulbs is about the best you can do.

I am a begginer to the security camera world, but have been researching them on and off since last Black Friday. I have installed a few different pre made systems like swann, Laview, and Q-see for people and never had any major problems with any of them after getting initial setup was done. That was the route I was going to go as well but I want to future proof as much as my medium budget will allow so really planned on 2 to 4mp and an ip camera system. I have learned a lot from SD and respect most of the info i have read so I am curious why so many people like these independent cameras better. They definately get a lot more attention than systems do. I do not have a desktop anymore but I suppose I could get one going just for that and run blue iris. I just feel like Im missing something on these cameras that dont have an nvr dont seem as easy. Any input on this would be great as Im considering buying some of these to play with. lol

imho
1) It is easier to spend a little $ on 1-2 cameras rather than purchase a complete system, even though it would be often wiser to purchase and install a good wired system.
2) More information and reviews on various sites for the direct to consumer products vs the traditional security camera systems.
3) Takes significant time to better understand security camera systems than many people want to initially invest - most people prefer to buy a quick and easy solution.
4) Easy to believe the myth that a wifi / wireless camera w/cloud service can provide a good security camera system.

That said, a wired security camera system is far superior to any wifi camera / wireless camera system options on the market right now.

Options today ( no mods required, battery operated option ):
Arlo Pro - note there is a solar panel option available for $70
Canary Flex

Options with mods:
The YI 1080p + modded outdoor rated case. ( wired power ) - possible to mod with battery also.

OK, now I know wireless sounds great - but in the end if you need a reliable system you should seriously look at a wired option. That's what I had to do, and even with a brick exterior wall you can find ways to do this also, even if that means running 1/2" EMT conduit down the wall to a junction box which the camera is mounted on. ( you can paint the junction box and emt pipe to match the wall fairly well )

I don't know if there's any truth to this, but someone brought up that their T+C even blatantly suggests they are monitoring network traffic for PW/Keystrokes. Search it and judge for yourself.

So I am pretty new to these, but I am wanting to use as a baby monitor.
I did the hack (had to downgrade firmware) and got rtsp working on VLC. But no night vision. It works with the yi app, but not when using the hack script. Any idea?

Also, I can't get it to work on tinycam. Works with rtsp domain on VLC, but not in tinycam unless I am somehow entering wrong.
