There's a lot of people claiming that you need to have an external amplifier to run this speakers. I believe nearly everyone could get by with their receiver's built-in amplifier.

I recently purchased one of these LSIm bundles (7 speaker version) to go along with my Denon X4000 [amazon.com] receiver. This receiver puts out 125 watts (Power Output (2 Ch Driven, 20Hz-20kHz, 0.08%THD@8ohm)

Like many people here I was convinced I needed to buy an external amplifier to go along with my new speakers and I was about to buy a Monoprice Monolith [monoprice.com] amp ($1400). However, after using the speakers for a week or so -- including playing many songs at or near reference volume (0.0 db -- ~110db max) I started to become suspicious of these claims. I hooked up a kill-a-watt to attempt to get some measurements of how much power I was actually drawing. It's a bit hard to replicate the worst-case scenarios of a movie or music. My methodology was to disable my subwoofers, disable the crossovers and playing loud (100 - 110db) sustained test tones at 35,45, 50 and 80hz. None of these registered more than a 120 watt increase over the receiver at idle on my kill-a-watt, indicating to me that I was only using ~60 watts per channel of my 125 watts available. Of course due to the way power draw works if I increased to ~113 db (or +3db on my receiver) I might be at the magic 120 watt per channel.

However, 110db is so loud that I don't know anyone who would want to listen to movies or music at this level sustained.

However, don't take my word for it. Here are some links on avsforum suggesting the same thing:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-...l-amp.html
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/91-...s-avr.html
https://www.google.com/search?q=avs+forum+external+amp+required+site:www.avsforum.com&sa=X&ved=0ahUK... [google.com]

ect ect ect. I would encourage you to research this on your own before you spend $1k+ on something you'd never use.

An external amp won't make your music / movies sound good if you're not currently getting clipping. If you listen to music and volumes that you can have a conversation (even a shouting match) over, an external amplifier isn't going to do anything for you.

If you're using these speakers in conjunction with a subwoofer, there's a 90%+ chance that your speakers will never draw more than 30-40 watts, even on max volume. Nearly all the wattage used by speakers is used to generate lower frequencies. All decent receivers have crossovers that are set up at 80 / 110 / 120 hz to redirect LFE from the speakers to the subwoofer.

Anyway, I've written enough. Please do take a look at some of the above links before spending a fortune to listen to background music.

Here are the valid uses I see for an external amp:

-Different zones in the house (most receivers can only power up to 9 speakers at a time)
-Dolby Atmos setups which go upwards of 12 speakers
-People with huge (25x25' and up) rooms and a passion for very loud movies / music
-People who love to crank it and let the neighborhood listen.
