Looking at the pictures on Amazon, this looks like the 740S-7, as opposed to the the 740S-6, although the whole Series 7 family should shave about the same (except some, earlier models were dry only, while later models are dry / wet - according to the ShaverCheck link below):

[ILS19R posted an excellent article, Braun Series 7 vs 9: Which One Should You Buy?, but the main article AND the comments cover a lot more topics than the title indicates - many which DIRECTLY addresses some of the questions in this thread.
(Slickdeals rules forbids a user begging for reps, but does not forbid a user asking for reps for OTHER users - so please rep ILS19R and upvote ILS19R's post if you find the article useful.)

Here is a good comparison between the 7 and 9:
http://shavercheck.com/braun-series-7-vs-9/
Excellent information in the main article AND the comments & responses by the author, who seems quite knowledgeable.

Some topics discussed - which DIRECTLY addresses many of the questions in this thread:
  • Series 7 family & performance
  • Series 9 family & performance
  • comparison of the two above, and with Panasonic Arc3 and Arc5 to a lesser degree (but lots of discussion of Panasonic in comments)
  • cleaning stations (7 vs 9 vs Panasonic Arc5)
  • whether good for whole head shaving (see comments for discussion of Arc5 and especially about ***rotary shavers***)
  • (fluctuating and extreme) prices of replacement parts - confirms complaints in this thread
  • more ....

Note(from neoslick): You can rinse the cleaning cartridges with hot water (shake hard), drain and replace about 3/4 full rubbing Alcohol. Never buy another. (Tested for a decade!)

Note(from neoslick): When using Double Edged
SAFETY wet shaving then all you really need to compliment it is a cheap (not expensive) foil-only for ear hair (for example) and touch ups. DE is faster, cleaner(goodbye to acne) and potentially closest by custom holders, blades and your closeness angle utilized. It's the slickest price too, incidentally. You simply have to do it right, give it a month of just 10% EXTRA technique over what you know already and let your face and your muscle memory get used to it. Find a video. > Funny:https://youtu.be/KZDPEogOU34 but you can just face lather quicker. Tip: Try Cetaphil instead of after-shave. Avoid alcohol(s) on your face.

I've got a similar unit and it's awesome. You can get a very close shave if you use it correctly. The version with the cleaning apparatus is nice but not strictly necessary.

In my experience your face needs to be clean and dry before using the razor. I use it after showering in the morning, after my face fully dried out. If the humidity is high and your face is sort of sticky wet using an electric razor is a nightmare. You have to have the proper setup and conditions to get the most out of this type of device.

I've been using the same Series 7 for 8+ years now and the only thing that ever annoys me is how fast those clean & renew cartridges disappear. Lucky for Slickdeals I wait until I see something about them every six months or so and I buy them in bulk. I've been trying to figure out if I should retire the old razor that I've replaced the head on twice in eight years... but I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. Since a new head is around $30... I might as well get the two heads and a new unit at this price...

The header of series 7 is smaller than 9 so you can get closer shave around your chin/neck area.

Are the heads on this better than series 3 as that's what I had and had to return it as it didn't give me close shave with foam even after 3 pass .

Anyone know which version of the 7 this one is (there are several). It appears to be the 720s, which is the basic model, and it gets mixed reviews (less than 3/5 on Braun website but 4.3 on Amazon). It is also the oldest version, although I'm not sure how much that matters.

Does this include the cleaning station and case? Are those worth it?

I don't believe so, but they're probably not worth it. It's not needed, but does make cleaning and charging easier (no need to plug the cord into the shaver).

Doesn't include, but you may be able to buy separately. The cleaning base is well worth it for me.

I've used the 7 for ages and tried the 9. After a month, I went back to the 7 due to a more nimble head and closer, quicker shave.

I think the cleaning fluid evaporates if you just leave it installed. I only put mine in the cleaning station once a week, so I (re)install and uninstall the cartridge every time. I keep the original cap and stick it back on the cartridge. They last months for me. This may not be what Braun originally intended but given that the cleaning station is optional, I think I'll be OK.
